The IMAX theater in Raleigh isn't showing the NASCAR film that was recently released. In fact, there is no place in NC with the movie (I'm going out on a limb and assuming that Charlotte might have a theater).

The home of NASCAR and we don't even get the IMAX movie. Oh well, we'll be getting the bigger screen version of Harry Potter soon enough...

That is interesting... I'll have to check it out here in Charlotte. One other nice little tidbit: Outside my office they have NASCAR Speedstreets going on. They basically close off about 10 blocks of downtown and have all kinds of NASCAR exhibits, food, etc.. It's not too bad to walk out of your building and run a simulator on your lunch break :)

I think Charlotte is really starting to grow on me ;) - AB

Please stop it. I will have to listen to Jim F whining all weekend about not getting to play in the #8 simulator!

Dustin and I were up in Boston a few weeks ago and went to the Nascar IMAX show!!! It was really good!!! In the opening sceen they are driving down one of the roads in the Blue Ridge Mts... The road goes over a small river... I will have to find the picutures of the old saturn fording the river!! I would reccomend it if you can find somewhere that is showing it!! I know the IMAX at the Boston Aquarium is playing it but that doesn't help many!!

After my repeated trips to Atlanta is REALLY grew on me fast.

I'll be moving soon and I'm actually looking forward to it. The suburbs are like a bunch of cary and durham's around one giant ass city. If you feel like being in a small town you just stay in your suburb. If you need something to do, you drive into hotlanta. It kicks ass....

Not to worry, DC's a big city. I'm sure we can find a simulator up there somewhere! :P

You'll love it. I love that feature about living up here. In about 1.5 hours, I can get into the city (via park and ride on the "T" subway system) and be at a show. Example... this past Tuesday night we went in to the Paradise Rock Club near BU and saw Eric Johnson play. It was fantastic. Can't do that in Raleigh. :nana:

And you folks thought I was nuts moving... Boston's great, and it hasn't been 90 up here yet, not even once! We're supposed to have 68 on Saturday and 72 on Sunday for our weekend events. I think it's maybe supposed to be 70 on Monday.

Anybody want to take a road trip north? :car:

I had a chance to see the NASCAR IMAX move a few months ago while I visited the new Smithsonian Air & Space museum out by Dulles Airport in DC. But the wife and I ended up picking some other IMAX movie that really sucked. In fact the promo for the NASCAR one was better than the entire movie that we watched!! We were going to then watch the NASCAR one, but by then the line for tickets was tremendously long. :(

Forget that... the winters suck ;) I lived in the Northeast for 23 years, and will probably be very hard pressed to move back, even with a large % of my extended family there.

Richard is correct, the Hazy Center has been showing the Nascar IMAX movie for a while now.

If you happen to be in the DC area, the Hazy Center is a must see in my book. Before Hazy opened most of these aircraft and spacecraft where at the Garber facility in Maryland which few folks even knew about. Joan's dad is a docent at Hazy (and at Garber in the old days when they gave tours there) and these guys have tons of stories about these craft. Hazy even has the Enterprise space shuttle (it was stored at Dulles for many years) in a separate hangar, sadly shorn of its leading left wing panel which was used to investigate the last shuttle breakup.

I took a tour of the Garber Facility several years ago. It was awesome. The old guy that was our guide knew that we were all aviation students so he went into great detail about some of the aircraft. VERY fun. But what was even more fun was the tour the day before. We toured the Air and Space Museum's storage hangar at Dulles. This was long before Mr. Hazy gave his wad of cash. The hangar had the SR-71 sitting outside and inside there was the Enterprise, the first Goodyear blimb gondola, and a TON of other planes. Some fully assembled most with there wings taken off and stacked along one wall. B-17 wings sitting on Ju-52, A-4, A-6 and B-25 wings and alot more. The stack was probably 15 feet high. It was the most diverse collection of aircraft that I have ever seen. And we had free run of the place. I have pics around here somewhere. Gonna have to look for those now.

It will be neat to see all of them restored as no work had been done at that time.

Sorry to have rambled. The aviation nut in me came out. Sorry.

From what I can tell, most of the restoration work is still being done at Garber. The long range plan is to move that work to Hazy when they build the next building. Only thing missing is the dollars ....

Most of the Garber tours were taken by folks that are ex-military or aviation buffs. Military pilots particularly appreciated Garber as many aircraft were stored "as is" after they were decomissioned. The pilots
could identify with their former rides much better in that environment than the shiny new-like birds they saw in downtown DC at NASM.

Todd : I have a collection of emails from the guy that was in charge of moving the Garber collection to the Hazey Center. I'll send them in a private email if you would like to read them. My fav was about when they moved the Enterprise into the Hazy Center at Dulles. A commercial 7x7 was taxing on a nearby taxiway and came to abrupt halt to watch for about 10 minutes. He imagined the captain on the intercom saying "Folks you're looking at the Enterprise rolling down the apron for perhaps the last time ever. So we're going to sit here and watch for a bit". They probably were late to the gate, but I doubt *anyone* complained to the FAA .....
