You always know what you're getting into with one of these E38s when the owner has stuck some random "V12" emblem on the car...

That V12 emblem was put on there at the factory.

But a $2500 750il seems like it'll be troublefree for sure.................I think you should buy it Mike.

Not on the E38. That badge is off the later model E65 7-series.

So Wikipedia states the following engine options on the e38....

Engine

Petrol:
2.8 L M52 I6
3.0 L M60 V8
3.5 L M62 V8
4.0 L M60B40 V8
4.4 L M62B44 V8
5.4 L M73 V12
Diesel:
2.5 L M51 I6
2.9 L M57 I6
3.9 L M67 V8

Transmission 5-speed manual
6-speed manual
5-speed automatic

Looks like the v12 was indeed an option on the '98 750 iL. Looking at the engine bay picture that is for sure a v12. That looks to be a serious beast. Is that a true v12 or is that like the 850 w/ 2 i6's married together? I know that had 3 computers, 1 for the left motor, 1 for the right motor and 1 to synch the two together. I'm not smart enough to work on that....

Edit: Mike, not sure if this helps, but if this v12 is indeed a marriage of 2 i6's, I talked w/ a guy that owned and fixed a 850. He had to break apart the marriage computer and resolder some of the connection points w/ in the case, they had broken loose.

Definitely, the V12 750iL was an E38 model. My point about the V12 emblem is that it wasn't placed on there at the factory on these cars (E38s). Somebody got one from the later model E65 760Li and stuck it on there....a badge whore who wants people to "know" it has a "V12" engine.

That's it folks. We've hit peak German engineering. Time to pack it up and go home.

Glad you guys are keeping this to the forum. All this dead hooker talk would definitely be out for BookFace.

Or you could go with one or two live ones in that huge back seat. IIRC they have a nice reclining feature. (I have a personal joke about reclining but I won't share it here)

In any case here is Mike's new avatar:

Art, I think your hyperlinks are bad....

It's not easy editing a forum post using a 3270 emulator.

OK, I put the URLs in quotes. copy/paste into another browser tab and delete the quotes:

First is an 840 (beat Scott to that, sort of)
"http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?zip=27705&endYear=2005&vehicleStyleCodes=COUPE&sortBy=derivedpriceASC&showcaseOwnerId=47973205&startYear=1995&makeCode1=BMW&searchRadius=200&mmt=[BMW[][]]&listingId=386071842&Log=0"

Second is a 645. Even though the styling is insipid, you know it's inherently safe and secure, since it comes from Java Motors

Wow, the back seat in that 840 looks quite comfy, lol.

Question for you Mercedes fanbois.

I have never had a thing for Mercs, so I wouldn't know where to begin. What's the best bang for the buck for my $13k? Let's assume that the bigger and more powerful the better. And let's stay away from really old (1990's) stuff.
