I finally read the entire thread on the Benzworld Forum. Fun times! I have found the Mercedes folks are the most helpful bunch on any of the forums. Not like the DB's on the Porsche forums!

Wouldn't that last statement be redundant?

You just bought the wrong Porsche. ;) While every forum has it's DBs... The 914 guys are generally pretty cool.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

That's great! I read your most recent post on the MB thread. So it sounds like it is better than just "it does not suck". ;)

Your project is going better than my winter project. I was doing a deep service on the Civic I bought for my daughter and took advantage of the warm weather on Wednesday to try to button the engine back up (timing belt, water pump, valve adjust, new A/C components, new alt, new PS pump, etc.). It started up just fine and all looks great except... a new oil leak on the oil pan seal. I replaced the seal, but I am pretty sure it didn't seat correctly in one spot. So pan comes back off soon.

I wonder if CHS couldn't fix that. They've fixed "deep" scratches (I didn't actually see that block) in our current Duff (d16) engine. And it ran a full season last year; we're still run it.

If there is one thing I can say about the Mercedes compared to other cars that I've done big work on, it's that the parts seem to be exceptionally well-designed and durable. I was able to re-use everything on the car ... trans gasket, exhaust gaskets, valve cover gaskets, all the hoses, plug wires, everything. Nothing was brittle, stuck to surfaces, or deteriorated. I'm used to hondas where half of the rubber stuff and gaskets that come off the car tend to split in half, and modern BMWs where all the plastic stuff cracks if you look at it funny. Even the Porsche seemed to have a couple of questionable materials and fastener choices compared to the Merc. Maybe it's just an AMG thing, dunno.

Driving the S55 at 65 MPH I was able to have a conversation in a whisper with my son. It's eerily quiet until you mash the gas then all kinds of cool noises and face-melting fun happens. It drives smaller than it is. 493 HP makes up for a lot of mass.

Very, very cool that you've got it back going.

I've had the same experience with quality of parts. The stuff on my 124 has mostly been very high quality. It makes a little more sense that the cars cost what they do now that I've been around one for so long.
