class offered by Wake Co sheriff and the class is cheap, $80. Down side is they only offer this once a month. They have a class next week, but you have to fill out their form and mail in payment. That's an antiquated way to register, but it is Wake co. The next class is on Dec 21st, but that might be cold at the range, assuming it's outside. I need to check on that. That's also pretty close to Christmas, so I don't see that one working for me either. The 2015 schedule isn't out yet.

So.....I'm still looking at possible options for a weekend class. If anyone wants to join me would be very cool... I see where Milko posted about Molotov Mitchell. Gotta love the name! Need to look into that one. Any other options?

I'm assuming you know this, but you don't need a concealed carry permit to purchase a pistol. I'm no expert, but I'd suggest getting a pistol permit, buying a pistol you want and practice with it. I know a place with some wide open spaces that can be used for some target shooting if you want. :mrgreen:

I see quite a few concealed carry classes offered around here, I'll pass along the info next time I see something. Another idea would be to stop in to a local gun dealer and ask them, I guarantee they will have some contacts for you.

Yeah, I'm aware that you can buy a permit, but that's a permit per pistol and you have to wait a few weeks on each permit. The concealed carry is an open permit to buy/sell, so just makes purchasing easier and have the concealed carry option as well.

Bret, if you're willing, I'm sure we could get a small group together to come raid the BMW farm for some safe shooting practice. We'll need a range master to control the shooting. I've taken part in some of the shooting exercises where you have near/med/far targets, standing/prone shooting and timed shoot/reload. Those were a blast to do. I'm definitely up for something like that.

Just an FYI, but talk to gun store folks. Not all classes are the same. I had some crazy guy who preached to us for a couple total hours about how he knew our society was going to hell because they teach evolution instead of creationism and he HAD ABSOLUTE EVIDENCE THAT EVOLUTION DID NOT EXIST. He never told us what that evidence was, though.

But he did cover the material (he knew it VERY well). He also gave us the test as a group VERBALLY (we wrote down our answers, but according to the letter of the law, it doesn't have to be an individual test!), so we all got a 100. Then we went to the range. He asked who knew what they were doing and just needed a check-off. A couple of us raised our hands, and he took us over first and made us show him quickly how we handled our firearm and had us squeeze a clip of ammo into some paper. Then he let us go and continued to *teach* everyone else the basics from start to finish. So he pretty much made up for the preaching, I guess.

I don't remember his name, but I found that class through Ed's Gun Shop down near Pinehurst on US 1. I'd find another class instead of that one if I had to do it again.

Also remember that you're putting your fingerprints out there into the government system if you do this. I know some folks that won't do it simply because of that. I got no plans to commit a crime, so I don't care. Hell, I just gave my fingerprints *again* for Global Entry. You also need to give your CCW card to a cop if you get stopped for anything, even if you're not carrying. In my experience, this is a BIG BIG BIG BONUS. Maybe I've been lucky, but I've been stopped a couple times and probably should have been given speeding tickets. But in one case I was armed and in a couple others I wasn't. I gave the officer my license *and* CCW card (even though they don't ask, you're required by law to present it) and informed him immediately of my armed status. In every case, the officer thanked me for presenting the card and his ears seemed to perk up about it, even when I wasn't armed. They treated me no different other than seeming to somehow have more respect and in every case sent me on my way with a verbal warning.

I got no complaints. Well, other than sometimes I wander into gun shops and have nothing to stop me from just buying something.

@ Donnie.... great story. As for the finger prints, I had to do that long ago when I worked in nuclear at the Harris plant to get my back ground check for security clearance. No major bank crimes since then, think I'm good to go. So the more I hear, I think I'm going to go w/ the Wake Co sheriff's offering. I figure that's got go be pretty legit and to the point.

I could be wrong, but at ~400+ a pistol, I dont think you will be buying multiple all at once. In Johnston You can get 10 permits a year. Up to 3 or 5 (I forgot since I have CCW).

That being said, I got the CCW so 1 I can not have to worry as much about transport laws, 2 so I can cc. 3, so i dont have to keep up with purchase permits.

I have a few guns as well if you want to shoot them or check out my range at some point. Feel free to PM me if you want the small list of what I have.

In Wake county you can get up to 5 permits at one time. I don't know what the limit is per year.

I think it's generally advisable to hand it to them regardless because they tend to get jumpy when they find out you have a permit but didn't inform them. Whether your carrying or not.

I had a CHP for 5 years but let it lapse and I bought that groupon James posted. The soonest class I could get into was January 18th, and they appeared to only have Sunday classes. The price was right though and I can wait a couple months.

This is correct. Not sure why I thought you had to inform them either way. Maybe that was just the suggestion of my CCW instructor. I've always done it, and it seems to work well for me, so I'm going to keep doing it.

I just checked...I've had my CCW for almost ten years now. Need to renew for a second time early next year.
