Excellent! Are you staying with your automatic approach to autocross?

If you don't already have a Ford private cash offer, be sure to order brochures online as Mike Westerfield recommended recently. I went to
http://www.ford.com/brochures/?gnav=header-tools last month and requested brochures for the '14 Mustang, '15 Mustang, and '14 Focus ST. All three arrived last week. Both Mustang brochures included a $750 private cash offer and the Focus one had $500. They are non-transferable and expire in late December.

Hi Art -

Manual trans. Performance Pack for 2015 is only available with manuals. A many time Solo National Champ (Chris Cox) in a variety of classes and his many time National Champ female significant other (Pilar Miranda) just bought a 2015 similar to mine except theirs has Recaros. With full tank it weighed 3733. They live in California so it will have lots of testing before Spring. Hopefully they knew what they were doing when deciding to buy a new Mustang for FS.

Regarding special savings, etc. I'm working on that using your approach and anything else I can think of. Michael Sperber emphasized to look carefully at any Ford mailers and also mentioned that even if an offer comes from a different Ford dealer that he can honor it also.

I understand from HCMC Pres Dave Olechovsky (who has a '15 PP on order too) that you can get an auto and PP with the 50th anniversary model. Of course, there will only be 1964 of them and they're probably spoken for. And they aren't available in red. I do like the chrome window trim and special rear quarter windows on that model.

Hmm.. I had not noticed before that the center brake lamp was moved to the top of the rear window. Nice detail.

Looking forward to seeing the new GT and how you like it on course. I'm surprised that it weighs so much though, but I've not kept up with Mustang GT weights recently either. I suspect you're going to LOVE this new car. :)

Kind of on subject...one of the biggest contributors to the larger F80 M3 weighing less than my car is that BMW now uses a lithium battery that is 30 lbs instead of 61 lbs. (i.e. a stripper F80 M3 with 6MT weighs about 3450lbs and the thing is about the size of my aged E39 M5 which weighs about 3920 lbs  ). I've seen a forum thread about Voltphreaks lithium batteries weighing 10lbs that people are using now. Are these legal in SCCA autox? They're insanely expensive (and I'd never go that route unless perhaps I was actually competing at Nationals or something), but the thought of easily dropping 51 lbs is interesting nonetheless.

Chuck -

Weight of Mustang. As it turns out my 2015 will probably weigh almost the same as my 2012 automatic. There is some info apparently from Ford that indicates the actually body shell is a bit lighter than the S197. The additional weight is from other reinforcement, safety features, bigger brakes and wheels, etc.

Weight of stripper or more realistically even a slightly heavier loaded F80 M3. Both are impressive even though the car is only a little shorter than a Mustang but still has big brakes and wheels, plus turbos. Amazing what a higher price point can pay for but what has BMW done that saves the weight?

Can "stripper" F80 M3's even be ordered by anyone other than a racing team?

Lightweight battery - I don't think batteries can be changed to smaller/lighter in Street. There is no mention of battery changes until Street Touring rules. FYI the LI battery in my FF was less than 4 lbs and out performed the 18 lb lead acid agm it replaced. Cost about 3 times as much though.

Absolutely, but what I was referring to is simply an F80 M3 with no options. It's a huge car but BMW has done an admirable job reducing weight everywhere on the car a lot of which is due to carbon fiber and plastic composite materials such as a carbon fiber driveshaft which I think weighs 12 lbs. The car is huge though...almost the size of the first BMW 7-series (actually has a longer wheelbase than that one).

I was kidding. What I meant was a "no option" BMW in the US. :D Is it practical to find one which hasn't been loaded significantly? I assume any special orders have long wait times. FYI the F80's appear to be 4 inches shorter than Mustangs and a couple inches "less wide".

FYI We stopped at Capital Ford this afternoon. Even though their website shows about 8 2015's they have far more than that. Maybe around 24 or even more. Many 5.0's with the performance pack and at least one PP with the standard cloth seats. I didn't see any with Recaros if you care. Most were black, magnetic, or guard.

A high percentage of F80/F82s are special ordered since that is common with BMW. Dealers have allocations already in the pipeline, and it is easy to change the configuration up until just a short while prior to the car being built. Nine years ago when we were looking for an E90 330i for my wife, she had to have a 6spd manual along with some other options, and the only choice was to order one. Back then it took about six weeks...we ordered in the middle of Dec and picked it up the fist week in Feb 2006. One good option ordering one is to take Performance Center delivery in SC. You get a free night in a hotel along with a nice dinner for two also free, then the next day get a 1/2 day for two on the track with a car equivalent to the one you're getting delivered.

I'll have to check the Mustang size again...can't fathom it's larger than an F80 M3.

Mustang is about 188 inches. F80 appears to be 184. Our 96 Mustang is 181.

Wow, just looked at the specs. I didn't realize the Mustang is now the same length as my M5 and 4" wider. Amazing. The four door M5 seats 4 comfortably and has a decent trunk...where is all this space in the Mustang used I wonder.

Coupe vs sedan may explain some of the difference but pony car long hood resulting in relatively unused space in front of the engine is probably the major reason even compared to similar length BMW coupes. I have noted that BMW 2 door coupes seem to have smaller trunks than the sedan versions. I'm assuming styling.

No "pics worth posting" yet.

In the interim: Go to Ford.com and follow the various links to "build a Mustang". Select GT manual and then Ruby Red. Then select performance package and reverse park assist. Vehicle "picture" will look exactly like mine.
