Everything old is new again! I tried to interest the powers that were 20 years ago to institute bar code reading of wrist bands at start. Cost / interface issues prevented it then, but present technology should make it a piece of cake. The benefits are obvious, and drawbacks minimal.
Steady autox patrons could have a permanent code, and walkups issued one at registration.

Carlton - You might want to post on http://www.roadraceautox.com/ since this forum currently seems to be used by a large portion of the autocross world as well as road racers. There have been timing equipment threads and some Axware discussions.

Carlton - New thread on roadraceautox.com today asking about axti.me versus AXware. Pronto, which SCCA National uses, was also discussed.
