First let me address the claims of censorship. The decision to delete the original facebook thread was made after a discussion amongst the officers, and we decided unanimously that this sort of bickering and rude personal attacks did not belong on our public facebook page (personal attacks are not tolerated on our forum either). In retrospect, I wish I had saved the content and posted it here in the forum so that discussion could continue, and for that I apologize.
Below is the current thread on facebook which I have just deleted, so that the content is preserved, no censorship is occurring, and the discussion can continue here.
The officers made some reactionary decisions with regard to the photos after numerous complaints were received. As elected officers, we do often have to make decisions ourselves as best as we can, and sometimes members will disagree. This doesn't mean it is a dictatorship; large changes in the club or pervasive rules applying to the future of the club should be made with input and discussion between its members. But we can't post a poll to the forum for every decision. Some have claimed that the "don't like it, volunteer" attitude is callus, but to a large degree, this is the way a volunteer club like this runs.
Moving forward, we will take the input from this discussion and decide what to do going forward in an official capacity, if anything, which may include a member vote to append the by-laws.
Let's continue discussion of this topic here, and please refrain from personal attacks. Thank you.

No more pictures of trophy girls. Please. I don't care how historic they are or whatever. We are not that kind of club anymore, and the I am tired of the discussion here centering on it. As much as the old timers may think it's ok to post crap like that, it's not. We are a club that welcomes all. This FB page is for car stuff. Let's keep it that way.

Robert Knott With all due respect to everyone's opinion, I think it is interesting that some would be concerned with the objectification of these ladies. Are those same people not assuming that the ladies are not smart enough to know what they are doing. Who is really using whom? We all need to quit judging others based on our own life experiences. Until we have walked in another's shoes or heels, we really don't have a clue. Have a great weekend.

Carlton Whitehead Just because there are tons of examples of other motorsports that are way behind the times with respect to their treatment of women doesn't mean that THSCC has to be too.
Frankly, I would much rather be a part of the solution than a part of the problem.
If you want to see scantily clad women, there's a place for that. I'll give you hint, it's not at a club that offers a Family Membership option.
I'm not spending any more time on this subject today. Unsubscribing from this thread right meow.
September 26 at 9:30am · Like
Richard Casto I started a new thread on the club forum (THSCC membership viewable only) and I am repeating some of the content here for those who don’t have access to the forum. I understand that one problem with the FB page is that it is just one big “thing” and you can’t segregate topics. If you view this page, you see all posts including on some things that you may not agree with or be of interest to you. Chalk that up to FB being a poor way to have discussions.
I also understand that some find the photos offensive, but I also think others do not. And I think both have valid opinions. I personally think the photos are OK as is given the context. I am concerned that only a single point of view is surviving. I also suspect those who are trying to moderate this have good intentions, but given I have acted in that role for years elsewhere (our club forum) I can tell you that sometimes the best answer is to just leave things alone. While some individuals may troll and try to create a train wreck just to watch it unfold, it likely would have burnt out on its own. But resorting to censorship on some pretty tame and commonplace photos just escalated in a direction you likely didn’t want to go. I hope the photos do not turn away some potential women members (which I am 100% behind), but I also hope how this discussion has progressed (i.e. censorship of ideas) doesn’t do more damage than the very tame photos ever would.
As to those who say this place is about “cars”, I would disagree. This is about THSCC which while is car centric; it is a social gathering for like-minded people. So there will be conversations here (and on the forum) that are not 100% car, but rather more as a discussion within friends and associates that are part of the wider THSCC community. And even then, the photos were THSCC specific and a reflection upon our 50 year history.

She gladly accepted and worked her butt off all day long in 90* heat to ensure winners, pics, trophies, contingencies, and sponsors were all where they needed to be and represented well. She LOVED IT. I say show the pics. I loved the vintage look at old history of the club. In fact, I was quite pleasantly surprised that THSCC appears to actually have had fun events in the past.

Michael Dishman Events in the ‘90’s were certainly a lot of fun, especially the two day events at Rocky Mount that involved the trophy girls. I rarely comment on anything on FB, perhaps because I’m an “old timer”. I was an autocross VP and club president for many years in the ‘90’s, and directed the NCAC when there was actually a state series, so I knew the club quite well at that time. To refer to these photos as “crap” is off base. Going back to the beginning of this thread, I’m not sure what to make of the comment “we’re not that kind of club anymore”. I know the ’90’s seems like the stone age to some, but believe it or not, we had people of all types, including females, competing and holding office during that time. As I recall, the only person we didn't welcome at that time period was the “church lady” who tried to drive through one of the barricades for the Wilson street AX. I can’t speak for all the females in the club at that time, but I know some of them had enough of a sense of humor that they chaired an event at Laurinburg and had “trophy guys”. What I find totally off base is that the photos were removed from FB……they are a part of the club’s history, and I see no problem with posting them in remembering the club’s 50th anniversary. When I was active, THSCC was a “sports car club”, but we were also a close knit group of friends. Many of my best friends to this day are people I initially met in THSCC. We never took ourselves too seriously, and always tried to have a good sense of humor. I hope that mindset’s not been lost because the events and camaraderie then were always a lot of fun.

Les Davis I realize that you Andrew an Milko don't get what I'm saying as it doesn't jive with your politics. But effectively what has happened here is the same as burka in the middle east, we have been forbidden from seeing women in a certain state of dress. The "offended" may be different people in each case but in the end it's just a different line in the sand for the sake of avoiding women being "objectified".

Mark Merrill A thought: maybe we could have trophy cars or something else these days.
Things are only special if you treat them as being special. I think it'd be awesome if we handed out trophies with a bit more celebration: put the receiver between 2 sports cars (event chair's choice) and take a pic of them getting the trophy from whoever's handing them out.
I think that was most of the point of the trophy girls in the first place: to add something special to the trophies ceremony.

Steven Duckworth I've heard ladies class locally referred to (crudely but correctly) as "noobs with boobs" class. At local events, it's a place for people to get their girlfriend/wife/mistress/etc out with "You'll have fun... you're not the only girl there... there's even a ladies class." Most of the women I know have moved out of ladies in the first year or two into open class, but still.... if it serves as a more "welcoming" way to help bring people to the sport, I don't necessarily see what's wrong with it.
Nationally, it again gives more people an opportunity to play. When you're travelling nearly 20 hours to Nationals (which we do from here), it's nice to be able to get 4 people in the car to split costs, split driving time, and just have fun together. Yeah you can argue that Ladies class is unnecessary because there's nothing truly separating men from women in skill in this sport, but I enjoy having a ladies class around.... and I know two THSCC ladies that will hopefully enjoy having it around in a FSP Rabbit at Nationals next year
14 hrs · Like · 2
Andrew Jonell It seems unnecessary and THSCC has had year long novice class so you don't get thrown into the big, scary "open street tire" class. Having Ladies class referred to as "noobs with boobs" is the icing on the cake that we're proud to not be eating.

Shawn Whipple I've been thinking about this a lot and this is what I propose as a solution. I am being 100% serious here.
1st some background, I was an officer when the club made the decision to remove the rebel flag from the logo (I was in favor removing it, if that matters) so I actually have some experience in these contentious/political issues. When we changed the logo those in favor of the change made a proposal, discussion was allowed, and then the club members voted on it. I was happy that it was approved but, if the club membership had voted to keep the old logo I would have abided by the results of that vote.
The core of this "trophy girl" issue is that a few people have decided that we aren't "that" kind of club, whatever "that" is. They are enforcing standards that many of us didn't agree too. Heck, most of membership don't even know what their standards are? Their standards, in my opinion, exceed what is generally acceptable in society. Take this case, posting pictures of girls in swimsuits is generally allowed in open forums, nudity is not.
I would propose that the people who think we aren't "that" kind of club get together and write a definition of what kind of club they think we should be. A set of standards, or TOS for being a club member if you like, and then let the club vote on it. I would suggest including folks of different view points but that's up to you all. I would suggest getting together in a neutral space and actually talking rather than ranting on the internet but again this is up to you. This is your chance to effect actual positive change.
If you work quickly you could include your proposal as a line item on the officer ballots this year but it could wait until next year and a vote could be scheduled at a meeting

Shawn came back to autocross when I was driving the 2 in HS TIR. Every single time the gap was well over 1.5 seconds after PAX. CSP has been my safe place from Shawn (where he regularly raw times me in CS).

Matt McGrain In all seriousness, you're a quick driver in CSP but din't be surprised if you're just as fast in a brand new mx5. Fresh bushings, brakes, engine, etc go a long way.

Les Davis Hey phuck you James Short. My previous post was not meant to be and end all be all, just a point of view. There are many points of view on almost every topic and to think there is only one that is the "end all be all" is quite foolish. This is precisely the problem here. Along the same lines of what Shawn posted earlier, lots of strong language and absolutes are being used by those that presume to be representing the THSCC and determining what that means now and in the future yet many very different points of view have been voiced here. The biggest irony here is that in the guise of being progressive, you are actually really being quite closed minded, summarily dismissing all points of view save one specific one. This is also being quite undemocratic. Again ironic.

Blair Deffenbaugh You know the one thing I'm worried about most? Which should be the one common thing amongst us all? Is that when I come back to Raleigh from WCU, there will be half the club there used to be for me to raw time in the Pulsar. I don't care what side of the fence you're on, a bunch of men cannot and will not successfully decide how the women of the club feel, without talking to them.

Zach Xak What concerns me that this is our public facebook page, and could be the first thing a prospective new member might see when finding our club. If the first post they see is one of these with all this bickering, that will undoubtedly give them a bad first impression of the club, and even a misleading one, regardless of how they stand on the actual issue. So, I ask that everyone PLEASE bring the discussion to our member forums and have at it. Discussion is great, and this is obviously a highly debated topic with lots of opinions on both sides, but there is no excuse to be rude, which is what a lot of you have resorted to. It doesn't reflect well on the club, and it doesn't reflect well on you. If these threads get deleted on facebook it's not because we are censoring, but simply because it has absolutely no place on our public page. Bring it to the forums.

Rodney Wright This is one of those posts where there is NO winning and no stuffing the genie back into the bottle. I'm shocked and amazed at the direction this thread has taken. If the intent was to make THSCC look like a bunch of F'ing fools, congrats, mission accomplished.
As president of the club, I'm not proud of the direction this has taken and what has been said.
Can we get back to the car discussions now? Going to take some time for this to heal....

Blair Deffenbaugh Zack and Rodney, nail on the head. Can't believe some of the things said to one another. Everyone is all bent out of shape about what "that" kind of club meant, well I thought we weren't the kind of club to beat each other down at the first site of a disagreement.

Jim Pastorius Well, some one should slap the individual who decided they are the THSCC history censor. Now your 50 year of THSCC on the public facebook page has two blurred pictures of some Corvette at some track and a person flipping off the camera. At least Art was posting historical pictures and those pictures were of members who contributed a lot to the club. An almost who's who of very important contributors or as the censor referred to them as old farts...stay classy.

Steven Spampinato Rodney Wright is correct. I feel guilty. I completely forgot about this being a public view. I admit I feel like an ass for participating. I should of used my head and ALL of you should agree. We could damage what we work so hard for in regard to the status of THSCC. We should take the argument to the forum.

David Teague Here is a thought, who is the moderator/moderators of the THSCC are they an officer s or not? If they are fine, if they are not, then the page should be run by people who are.

Brice Wesley Johnson I deleted the photos. I think it was the right move. My post (the one we are all commenting on) was a mistake. I didn't mean to insult long time members (even though I understand the wording clearly does). That was a big mistake.
