I think she made you spend some money for nothing. My understanding is from reading the law that SUV's are exempt so there is no way you could be overweight. The good news is it should not have been much money and it expires at the end of the year when you can switch back.

WTF?!?!? G*dd*mn DMV doublespeak. I'm still looking for an answer here.

Ron, can you cite the text that I can print out and keep with me to present to an officer if I'm ever "caught" hauling my 5000 trailer load in my 7000 lb SUV to get out of a ticket?

I thought the specifics were llisted earlier in the discussion. I actually do have a copy of the law and can indeed look it up. Or you can go to the DMV's web page aond down load it. Its something like 400 pages long.

Hopefully the last post for this. On the way to Roebling we started this discussion again and Mike Whitney called the DMV as we drove. The final word. And this from a DMV enforcement officer.

If no weight is listed on your registration then you do not need weighted plates. Period. If pulled over and the officer sees this, he is NOT allowed to weigh your vehicle and/ or trailer.

If you do need wieghted plates the penalty should you be pulled over, is $1 per pound over.

Thanks Ron, I was meaning to do this.

Just to add to this - The DMV guy says "if your registration says 'private passenger vehicle'" (ie doesn't have the weight) "you can tow and haul anything you want". I am curious what the registration says for vans.

Now I am sure that you aren't supposed to exceed the GVWR...

SUV drivers rejoice!!!

FYI our Camper Van (Class B RV) is registered as a private passenger vehicle.

Not exceeding the GVWR is "self enforced" . . . i.e. overload too much too often and you or your car/truck/trailer may die. :(
