I know some of you (Whitney in particular though I'm sure there are others) have bought and/or sold a car out of state.

What are the gotchas wrt to title transfer? When I've sold cars in NC I've had the title notarized in my (seller's) presence (granted a few times the buyer was there at the time as well). If I'm selling my NC titled car in Washington, is it the same steps? Once I fill out the back of the title and get it notarized, I hand it over to the buyer and they have to handle the title transfer between WA and NC?

I hate your selling that car now, would have liked to buy it, but would have to have factored in replacement lowering seats. Nice car, hate to see you sell it....

Notarize your signature on the title and hand it to them.

^This.

The whole notarization thing in NC is to confirm that the person whose name is on the title is the one actually signing over the title to the new owner. Once the title is signed over by the owner, whoever puts their name on the title as "buyer" can then submit the title to their DMV and they will be the new owner of the car. So be careful (as a seller OR a buyer) if you do decide to leave the buyer portion blank after having seller's signature notarized.

I think the NC Notary manual says you need to have both buyer and seller areas filled out on a NC title, but most notaries will notarize it as long as the seller ID has been verified, since that's what they're really responsible for.
