From what I have read, yes, the shingles will still need to be replaced, though the ones covered by the panels will last longer as they are not suffering though near as much as if they were not covered. The process sounds fairly easy. just unbolt it set it on the ground or something and put your shingles down. (im sure its way more involved but thats what my research made it sound like)

Alternatively, if you are replacing your roof to begin with, They have solar shingles. they have about the same efficiency as panels. The benefit is they wont stick out like a soar thumb as do the panels.

We're due for a roof soon. I might have to check into the cost comparison of doing part of the roof in solar shingles.
