I've heard good things about the Vdub TDI motor. Not a ton of speed or torque, but a good solid dependable engine. As for everything wrapped around it, well, there's the question. Friend of mine recently purchased a TDI and is VERY happy w/ his Jetta. There are no leather interior options in the Vdub though. The mazda 3 would be a great choice, the one I had was a blast to drive. Solid car and was easy to work on, but that was an '04. They've changed the body style now.

Ask Bill Aycock how he likes his Vdub. I think his type R is a blast to ride in. Felt like a very capable car and AWD to boot.

I do recommend you go drive either the 335d or just the 328i e90 platform. One of the best car's I've ever driven. Don't know much about the f30 platform... My mechanic did tell me those turbo's can go out anywhere from 70k to 120k. About 7 large to replace....

Steve, for once we agree on something . I actually WANT a 335d sedan. That thing is a beast. There is a tuning house,Hartge tuning, that was featured in Diesel power..IN germany, that tuned a 330d to stupid levels of torque, and still did not smoke all that much.I want to put a chip or something in one,the tranny would not be pleased..But I tell ya, a tuned diesel is a scary thing. You would buy two things alot..Tranny parts, and tires! 1k ft lbs torque, in sled pull trucks. No nos, no water methanol injection i think, none. all motor..The drag trucks run 100 psi boost, and nos, and water methanol.and all that, and run ridicuous numbers for a heavy truck..12 to 13 second quarter mile times in a streetable ish 4 ton dually diesel. Is do able with some work, not much, tune, injectors, maybe maybe a bigger turbo...If so not that much bigger,go crazy with the internals and you can make a duramax or cummins make stupid amounts of power.Turn driveshafts in to pretzels, axles in to a twisted mess..Blow engine mounts off.You should see what all that torque and a sled can do to a frame of a f350.
No smoke,416 ft lbs torque, as much as a new camaro btw.4 seats,cd,air con,cruise...Dude, I WANT one.

My wife has a 2012 Mazda 3 (last body style with the current skyactiv engine). It handles well and is pretty fun to drive, and I have absolutely no problems with it as a commuter car. That being said, if you get one with an automatic (like mine), it's just not going to feel very sporty/spirited. It is geared for fuel economy and it shifts early for economy because in the end, it is still an econobox.

If I were shopping today, it would be very hard to turn down the newest GTI. The DCT transmission is so much better than any automatic you would use, the performance pack has a MECHANICAL LSD, its the lightest golf since the mkIV, has as much torque as your mazda6, and all in a 4-door hatchback that can get 35 mpg highway.

We were in the same boat a few years ago and went with the Mazda 3 for the wife. Out of everything that we looked at, it had the best balance of fun and price with good MPG. It's got 65K on it and has been a good car for us. If she ever gets tired of it (she still loves driving it), then I'll be happy to drive it, although I'm kind of hooked on the convenience of having a minivan now.

I am lobbying for the new GTI although the performance pack wont be available until Dec. She's pushing back because the DSG only gets 32hwy.

When is the Speed3 coming!?

Wait for the turbodiesel Mazda2. :P

Any VW is the last car I would want to own not in-warranty.
