Did my first AutoX in 1993 in NY and ran with the SCCA up there for 5 yrs. Upon arriving in NC in 1998, I immediately attended the NCRSCCA meeting only to find out they didn't do Autocross. At that meeting I learned about Triad & Tarheel. The next Sunday morning I was headed to a Triad event and found myself behind a Blue Corvette and a White Fiero on Hwy 98. Both cars pulled into a gas station so I pulled in behind them thinking they might be headed to the same place and possibly knew where they were going. I introduced myself and met Neal Harrington & Mike Dishman for the first time. I guess I joined THSCC that same year.

Still a great club and great folks!

PS: I know you are thinking "Hmmm, he's been doing this 20yrs and still hasn't learned how to drive?"

There is only one problem with your story Cash. :-) Mike Dishman's '91 Corvette was white, the blue 2002 Z06 didn't come along until, well, late 2001 at the earliest. I remember vividly planting my ass in that car when it made its first appearance at a THSCC event.

Yeah, I was thinking that after I posted - it probably wasn't blue. I'll use my advanced age as my excuse. :sing:

I don't think "old" applies in Cash's case and even if it does experience in life is not a reason let alone an excuse.

My intro to AutoX is probably the most unique. My son Eric called me up from Chapel Hill where he was studying communications. He was offered to do a TV show called “The Wrench”. When he talked to the producer, he pitched a story line about two generations of Millers competing in two generations of Japanese sports cars and two shops competing against each other. The cars were an 88 super charged MR2 and a rather slow 75 Datsun 280Z, the shops were Phantasia and Krause and England. He told me that I had to do it because it would be important to his future career as a documentary maker. My Z car was upgraded to a ported intake, 50 mm throttle body, and headers. The MR 2, a half size super charger pulley and Azenis 215 tires. The course was an 1/8 mile drag, into an autox sections, a short rallyx section, then a drag finish. The Z Car brakes were going with the 70 MPH entrance into a slalom. Eric beat me badly. That year, 2003, Eric talked me into taking a THSCC Novice School. Chris Petersen was my instructor. She will probably tell you how badly I sucked. I spun in my first 150 ft and then again in the lane change, the most violent spin that I have ever had. I had to buy Eric new tires, they were flat spotted so badly. Having 13 lbs of boost in a very unstable car is not the way to learn how to drive. Needless to say, I didn’t have enough the courage to show my face again until the following year when I took the Novice School for the second time. I’m probably the only guy ever to flunk. David Spratty was my instructor. I did not make many autoX’s that year because I would typically break something at every event. Finding replacement parts and completing the repair usually took more than a month. I joined the club in 2005 and purchased the first NC Miata to land in RTP with cloth seats and an LSD. I spent the next year drifting and have gotten slightly more serious since then.

That's a bunch of highlights of my THSCC career. I helped setup/staff the "Wrench" autocross at the RBC Center, and I was one of Spratte's first instructors. I wish I could claim that I taught him everything that he knows, but it's more like I taught him all that I know - and it didn't take long.

I was one of the finalist for that episode of The Wrench. I was still running my Datsun 510 at the time.

Ran my first event in 2001 I believe, 2 10" subwoofers and a nitrous tank in the trunk in my 1996 GS-R. That car handled MISERABLY due to the 2"+ drop and stock shocks. Tech inspection didn't want to let me run without removing the tank from the trunk.

Then, a year or two later, I (shockingly) blew the motor on the integra, and was relegated to a 4 cylinder ford ranger for a couple years. Met my wife, who had a 1999 Civic Si that I autocrossed once and got the bug again, but the car got stolen shortly after. Once I got my mazda, I was back into it again, and when Mary got the Mini, it was time to actually become a member. Then some asshole who's name starts with "Ry" and ands in "an Holton" talked me into being an officer.

My first event was an autocross school in November, 1997. I became a member by 2001. I let my membership lapse while the Air Force moved me around (starting in 2004), but I came to some summer events because the Air Force let me have 30 days a year of leave, and let me take them all at once. (Later, they started throwing my schedule out of whack with deployments and related nonsense)

When I rejoined for reals last year, it was very nice of the registrar to give me my old membership number back. :)

My first event was in September 1996 in my friend's Streep Prepared 86 VW GLI at Rocky Mount. DNFed all runs.

I was a mere kid at age 19. The Jetta is long gone, but my memories are alive and well. First event in my own car was at a Triad Event in 97. I had that old prelude until 2006. Did 3-6 events per year with THSCC, Triad, and CCR until I moved away 2001. Did a few events while I was living in Western New York, then in Charlotte. Came back to Raleigh in 2005, did not autocross again until 2009.
