that's something I've never ridden on is a snowmobile. I beat those would be a blast right now, although we're FAR from the 3-5" snow fall that Greg was touting...

Grew up and NH riding them - we called them snow machines up north. It wasn't long before my brothers and I had fashioned ramps to see how far we could jump the thing. Good times!

I've never ridden one but definitely would. However, I don't think I'd want to take one off any 'sweet jumps' like they do on the X-Games though.

When I visited the Arctic Cat factory for work last year up in MN, along the way I kept noticing these mini stop signs in the middle of the cornfields we were traveling along. Come to find out they have separate 'roadways' up there traversing though the fields just for snowmobile traffic all winter. Very cool.

Guess I'm slightly disappointed it's not more snow but still going to slosh around later in it and try not to hurt myself on the mountain bike.

Until they start making warm snow, if I never see it again, ever, I'd be just fine with that. I HATE me some snow. We got about 6" here in Wilson, but even with my 15 mile (mostly rural) commute I still made it into work today. My old Z-24 can still GIT-R-DONE in the snow pretty well.

An ATV makes a decent snowmobile in this area.

Damn right it does, I have been jealous of the kids zooming up and down our road today.

I'd think 2" of snow is likely not enough to effectively operate a real snowmobile.

So I'm a southern boy and had never ridden a snowmobile until a few years ago.

I went in early Feb to a three day snow driving school with Brian Smith since I was a member of the CMP club to the great white north of Haughton, Michigan. First, the school...man that was awesome. They had road courses and big ice fields and concentric skid circles and all kinds of different cars. We rolled several onto their sides in snow banks. Climbed out, pushed it back over, and off you went with no damage. Otherwise it was the most awesome car control school you could imagine.

But one evening we went into town and rented snowmobiles. They included helmets and face shields, and we all brought snow gear since we knew we'd probably rent sleds once.

Holy shit, that was a BLAST. Even crappy rental sleds are AMAZING. I can't imagine what *good* sleds can do. We were zipping around on all these sled paths, complete with stop signs and such like Matt mentioned. We found bars out in the middle of nowhere that were ONLY accessible by sled, in fact. And frozen lakes. And we rode and rode and rode. The only problem was that ultimately my face shield completely froze up such that I couldn't see out of it. Turns out for night riding in particular you really need a heated shield, which they don't rent (but rented sleds even had power ports to plug that kind of stuff in). So I rode and rode with my shield up and my eyeballs getting completely sandblasted by snow. I thought I had done permanent damage later, but turns out they healed overnight just fine.

After hours of this, we rode back into town and went and had many beers and dinner. Then we left and got back on the sleds and went and did a bunch of "drag races" on the frozen river in town. We rolled sleds and probably should have gotten hurt, but nobody did. Turned those sleds in around midnight, IIRC.

That was some of the most fun I've ever had on anything with a motor. The entire weekend was one of the most fun weekends I've had doing ANYTHING.

Sadly, haven't been on a sled since.
