noticed some saw dust on the front porch today and started investigating...

On a wodden decoration (plant hanger) there is a big round hole (1/4" diameter) that has been bored by some sort of bug.

If they stick to cheap decorations, I don't care, however, last time I checked, a good portion of our house is made from wood, and I'm not really willing to share that part of the property.

Anyone have a guess as to what made the hole? It doesn't appear to be there anymore, so I can't just knock on the piece of wood and ask...

Sounds like carpenter bees, to me.

Google has much info on them:

There's a bunch of ways to get rid of them. You probably want to do that, lest they think they are invited to eat your house.

Yep is the hole is perfectly round and you see saw dust its carpenter bee's.

And there can a lot of hidden tunnels that have done damage.

I bet that the plant hanger is unpainted. I was told that they will not go after a painted surface. So if your wood is painted or stained they will probably leave the house alone. I had them eat up a facia board once but the inside surface had never been painted. From one entry hole they had created a network of tunnels in the 3/4 inch board.

The wood is thinly stained, the ouse is vinyl siding, so lots of places to get in and play with the untreated wood above grade...

Maybe it's time to take out the bug killer and spray the house again.

Only if the paint is in good shape. We had quite the Carpenter Bee Fun Park in our old back porch. Which was painted actually. The only thing I can think of is that paint was not in good shape.

Doesn't matter now. Porch went away. It was pretty bizarre watching all those bees keep coming out of the porch as we hit with sledge hammers.

Maybe an ITR in DS.

Those B's bored into the handle on my snow shovel, which snapped in two when I tried touse it this past winter. Try spraying some carb or brake cleaner in the whole. A little auto based justice.

Yes, it was (past tense) a carpenter bee. I found it (or a relative) working on another piece of outdoor woodwork. I think a direct hit with Ortho Bug-B-Gone has discouraged any further activities by this one bee.
