How about a 1st-gen M Coupe? You can find them for cheap and they are a lot of fun to drive. Granted, they are ugly, but even if it doesn't appreciate, it's not much of an investment and you will get to enjoy the hell out of it.

the real question is, what car(s) can you buy for a reasonable amount today and see significant appreciation ten or twenty years from from now?

I'm being serious here. The Integra Type R. It was the dream car for lot of young 20 somethings when they couldn't afford it. When the get more money in their later years they will be lusting after the dream car of their youth. With limited supply and potenial for high demand it could be poised to be a collector car 20 years from now.

that was one of my thoughts too, although they're already kinda expensive so that's less room for appreciation. also:

- 04 to 06 sti, even with a few mods
- evo 8/9 not beat to death
- unmolested 99-00 civic si
- early hardtop nsx
- bmw 850 csi, although they may have jumped the shark already
- benz c63/e63, the high revving NA ones
- diesel excursion. seriously there's nothing else like one.
- gmc syclone/typhoon
- clean, original, rust free 88-91 crx

I recently tried a successful subscription to classic motorsports. I let it lapse though telling myself to re subscribe in 20 years when cars from the 80s and 90s are in there.

100% agree with Shawn on the type and other cars like it.

late 90s to early 2000s ford f250 turbo diesel 7.3l v8 . That is what we have as a truck, could use more power, but then it would be a little spooky.. As it handles like a big rig, and stops like one.Panic stops are not a option, as are tight round abouts. Anyhow, a bed cap and four doors.. Great truck.hte bus was a non turbo 7.3l v8 diesel. That is why it was so slow, ours is no rocket, but is faster than the bus.Later model till 03 trucks had a intercooler, and much more power and a five speed.21 or so mpg empty highway at 68 mph. 1900 rpm or so. 2100 and it eats diesel .
Its slow as molasses, but so what.. you could tow most other folks backwards .Maybe a jag e type, big cats are cool.66 corvette hard top! I love that body style.Lake pipes, light blue paint, som rims, oh man. camaros are cool too. Or a mini 1275 cc cooper s. I saw those all the time at vintage races growing up, them and 914 porsche. Datsun 510 is awesome too, love those.

What EAG has done is cornered (as best they can) the market on low to very low mileage cars with no damage/paintwork history, etc, and push the market up hard. If one is looking for an E39 M5 with 10k miles in showroom condition now after 11-15 years, it's very hard to find (i.e. impossible essentially unless you're lucky and ready to pounce the instant a car appears on the market with cash), hence EAG immediately buys cars like those with an immediate wire transfer offer to the seller. Same with the Mcoupes/roadsters -- for most part you'll find garage queen low mileage cars in their inventory, some never in rain, etc, so who is really on crack are the BUYERS. :) People see something like a 2002 M-coupe with 2k miles and (after smoking their crack and 5 shots of vodka later) ask themselves where they will ever find a 2k miles car in this condition again; then they pull the trigger (some hoping a bigger fool will arrive in the future to pay even more most likely).

They go through any car they buy to ensure all the maintenance is done, there are no issues with it, etc, new high-end tires, etc, and then they offer some sort of buy-back guarantee.

This whole "low mileage, BMW M-car" speculation going on right now will reset at some point as we all know (?). Of course about 30 years ago I worked with a guy at IBM who was buying up Dodge and Plymouth Hemi cars and engines (I think he had 6 complete engines in his basement). Last I knew him before I transferred away, he had 3 Hemi cars in excellent condition. Prices were pretty strong at that point, so people used to tell him he was crazy for paying so much for the cars and the engines.... Hence you never know. When E30 M3 prices broke out, the majority proclaimed people were idiots for paying $20k for a car with 40k miles on it and the sellers were crazy thinking the car was worth that much. Now such a car might sell in the $50-60k range, if not more.

Hell, I can easily recall the mid-70s when a typical Shelby Mustang that had been used daily was available for $4k or less even....

Yeah, I say good for EAG if they're making a living selling E36 M3s for $30K+. I guess there are those with a lot of disposable income, who decide they've just GOT to have the nicest, lowest mileage whatever it is, and they'll pay to do it. There's a guy out of Los Angeles doing something similar with old Mercs, only he's actually doing restoration work on them, rather than selling them as is.

Even so, I submit that anybody willing to pay $26K for an E30 325is needs to check themselves into some kind of inpatient clinic.

They just recently sold one of the three low mileage E30 325is cars they had. They bought two of them from a seller in Winston-Salem who was asking about $12k each for them, and after minor refurb they sold one of those for north of $25k  The other one is still there.

Here's another recent example of their work with crack buyers. They bought this E30 M3 where the owner was asking $34,000, https://www.bmwcca.org/classifieds/listings.php?make=BMW&model=M3&id=7869 and then sold it within a week for $52,990 http://enthusiastauto.com/qsearch/?id=4713&form_display=51#.Ur2ak_t0loS.

Karl, are you saying you wouldn't pay $4900 for a 318 w/ almost half a million miles on it (link from Jalopnik)?

I don't think that I'll ever understand the mentality behind buying an overpriced low-miles car and sitting on it. If I buy another M-car, then I will do what I did to the last one and drive it like I'm trying to use it up before it expires next month. The eBay listings that I put up there were the extra-low priced sales, some of which had issues, but there were plenty of them in excellent condition for reasonable prices. With a little patience you can get a good deal on most cars (well established collector cars excepted), so just keep an eye on CL and an eye on eBay and something will pop up.

Not necessarily for "an E30," if that's what I just had to have. But not one with half a million miles on it.

Far be it from me to judge when the numbers are still in four figures. I paid entirely too much money for my Mercedes, because at the time, it was the lowest mileage one for sale in the country. I'd probably do it again too. But $26K seems egregious for a 325is.

Given inflation wouldn't that translate to something like $65K new? I'd rather have a used 128i with three pedals.
