Re lusting -- somewhat on subject...

Over the past couple of years, it seems many have been struck with severe lust after German cars I suppose starting with the interest in early 911s and exploding from there. Any collector who rolled out of muscle cars in 2005 and into stuff like 1971 911s, 914-6, etc, would have missed the muscle car price implosion and rode a 3-4 times (or more) multiple appreciation in Porsches. Pretty crazy. Who would have thought that a 1971 911S could go for $200k just a few short years ago.

Speculation is reaching a somewhat fevered pace at this point it seems. For example -- quality examples of the E39 M5 are now commanding large sums. EAG just sold a 10k mile one for over $70k. Really nicely kept low mileage ones are all now $30+k and up. After bottoming out in 2009, prices are up 50 to 100% on cars like these. The rate of price appreciation has exceeded that of the E30 M3 when it started appreciating strongly in the early 2000s, so one would assume that "rate" is unsustainable.

There are technical reasons for this German car fanaticism to some extent (inflation, ZIRP related mal-investments, etc), but it's a real time example of unmitigated lust apparently.

real shelby cobra big block! or a quattro rally car spec. Those cars sound amazing,

i would go for superformance, and buck the factory five trend. i am not impressed with solid axle cobras. That is just my two cents.

The audi sounds amazing, and cant handle any worse than my wrx does.

or a 66 corvette with some moxy.Gorgeous body style.

So, Chuck.....sell at the top? That's cool those cars have appreciated so well recently!

Not sure what car I really pine for, but I keep coming to how much I would enjoy a Lotus Exige S220 or 240. Yeah, it's fragile and a cracked font bumper cover results in a Salvage Title if you to get insurance to pay for repairs, but it's such a raw pure performance car...yeah. That's the car I'd jump up and buy if ability and opportunity intersected.

I think we all just lust after the next acquisition; I've owned a Z06............. I would have loved to keep it forever but it just wasn't in the cards. I miss it but then again........

I've wanted a P-car since I was old enough to talk. Maybe one day I'll stumble across one that I just have to have while holding a big enough check in hand. Or not.

I will say I'm fortunate enough to own a car I've lusted after for nearly 20 years. I bought a very nice example of an e36 M3 a few months ago. At 140K miles, it's certainly not a new car, but it's tight, responsive, and makes lots of nice noises. It also got me in a lot of trouble with my wife, but it wasn't the first time and it won't be the last.

I still lust after a C5 Z06, especially after driving Les's a couple of years ago.
I've wanted a _nice_ 2002 for a long time, spurred by ownership of a really crappy one
I'd love a '73 911 RS (or a nice replica)
How about a resto-mod / Pro Touring muscle car? Make mine a first gen Firebird with an LSx and a Richmond 5 spd
Give me a big early 70's road-floater convertible. I have a thing for a 71-73 Buick Centurion ragtop with a BOP 455.
While we're at it, I'll take a well done FD RX7 with an LS motor and a T56.

I could come up with more...

Another example of lust in progress -- check out this eBay auction (in progress) for a 911S that 10 years back he couldn't have sold for $5k most likely: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261354596707

I'm really the worst car enthusiast. There really isn't any car that I lust after. There are some projects I'd like to do, for instance I'd love for someone to hand me a clean Miata, a crate LS[12379A] and a check to cover the costs of integrating the two. Or the same with a LS, a G-body (Monte Carlo, non-SS, or Regal preferred) and a T-56/TR-6060. Or an LS, a 3rd gen Nova and a modern suspension.

There seems to be a pattern there though.

For reasonable stuff, I'd probably find the nicest FD RX-7 in the country, and buy that.

the real question is, what car(s) can you buy for a reasonable amount today and see significant appreciation ten or twenty years from from now?

Find a rust free and nice Porsche 914. Drive occasionally, keep on top of maintenance. 4cyl ones can still be found for well under $10k.

I'm being serious here. The Integra Type R. It was the dream car for lot of young 20 somethings when they couldn't afford it. When the get more money in their later years they will be lusting after the dream car of their youth. With limited supply and potenial for high demand it could be poised to be a collector car 20 years from now.

that was one of my thoughts too, although they're already kinda expensive so that's less room for appreciation. also:

- 04 to 06 sti, even with a few mods
- evo 8/9 not beat to death
- unmolested 99-00 civic si
- early hardtop nsx
- bmw 850 csi, although they may have jumped the shark already
- benz c63/e63, the high revving NA ones
- diesel excursion. seriously there's nothing else like one.
- gmc syclone/typhoon
- clean, original, rust free 88-91 crx
