Thanks for all the input! I decided the overriding priority was very high battery life, followed by close to "pure" Android without rooting.
Purchased a Droid Maxx today. Just like any new computer the first steps include updating the OS (to KitKat), app updates, setting up email accounts, transferring data, installing my other apps, customizing settings, and, of course figuring out the "new" way of doing everything.
So far so good regarding look, feel, performance, etc. but really too early to tell how much "improvement".
Thanks again,
Dick
Progress report: I like the new phone. Only problem so far is that it appears FoxFi (no root) caused the phone to lockup when testing usb tethering. Reset solved the lockup and reinstalled all the Play Store apps and updates. I got practice redoing all my other stuff.

Update: I like the Droid Maxx and this version of KitKat. The screen is "clearly" easier to read with higher brightness than the GNex on automatic. The 1/4 taller and 1/8 wider screen and/or other improvements make the pages significantly easier to read. Everything seems to happen faster (not that the GNex was considered slow afaik). The new camera controls seem easier to use. However, for some reason my bank's mobile app didn't like the checks I tried to deposit last night but the GNex did fine. Battery life is, of course, much better than the GNex, especially since it's extended battery is 2 years old.
Haven't found a way to mute the "Droid" boot up sound.
