Where in the US is passing on the right illegal? (when you are on a multi-lane highway of course with dashed white lines).

A former coworker (from Orlando) once complained about the large number of retirees back home who drove slowly in the left lane -- and said that passing on the right was illegal in Florida. But 30 years later, the google disagrees: http://www.123driving.com/flhandbook/flhb-passing.shtml

Yeah, I don't know of anywhere that passing on the right is illegal when you have dashed white lines, but I've only been driving since 1974 and haven't been to every state I suppose. :) Now of course I see 90% of drivers passing on solid white lines too, and such is never enforced from what I've seen. :(

Regarding Chuck's comment on going to the middle of 3 lanes. I do this a LOT, especially when towing, in urban/suburban areas with lots of ramps and moderate to heavy traffic. Far too much on/off traffic and trying to change lanes to avoid it doesn't "work well" when towing in particular. Combine that with the likely poor "merge" capability of the average driver and there is no way I'm going to spend much time in the right lane if I have a reasonable choice that at least gives faster traffic a chance to get around me easily. That said, I try to stay as far to the right has common sense allows.

Regarding no passing on the right my early recollections (my first license was in 1966 or 67 in Washington State) are that it was either illegal or "frowned on". Certainly not "real world" which may be why nobody can find a current version of the "rule".

Passing on the right: (from http://www.ncdot.gov/download/dmv/handb ... nglish.pdf )

Passing on the right
Passing on the right is against the law except in areas where it is specifically
permitted. Passing on the right places your vehicle on the blind side of the
vehicle you are passing. The vehicle you are passing could unexpectedly make a
right turn or pull over to the right side of the road.
Exceptions where passing on the right is allowed:
• On highways having at least two lanes traveling in each direction;
• On one-way streets where all lanes of traffic move in the same direction;
• When passing a vehicle that is in the left-turn lane;
and/or
• When driving in a lane set aside for right turns.

On three-lane highways, you must not pass except in the center lane, and then
only where the center lane is marked for passing in your direction.
Exception: When the vehicle in the center lane is making a left turn.

last year. I have also stopped a few other times for license checks. I have also been randomly selected and pulled for safety inspections. of course in my car's I only seem to find DUI checkpoints and never a license or random safety inspection.

Of course there is probably some profiling going on with the above since the bikes were all getting pulled and the car's flagged past the inspection. Good thing its illegal to do stuff like that.

My wife always stays in left/center lanes too frequently and I give her crap about it and just just scoffs. About 6-7 years ago we were going to NYC and were in NJ and she got pulled for it. Cop let her go since she was a ditsy, apologetic southern girl but man it was funny when the cop left the window and she turned to look at me :).

I've found that my overall mood is much better when I just let stuff like this go. If I need to tailgate somebody to "get them to speed up," or I need to break the law to get someplace on time, that's my fault. I should have left home earlier. :sleep2:

A lot of truth here. I frequently find myself these days when I see someone zipping by at 20 or so over the speed limit having internal commentary, "Hey look, that guy is clearly winning the race, you know, the race across town. Oh wait, there is no race he's just an asshole." This is most appropriate when I see someone doing something completely stupid that is clearly going to achieve absolutely nothing to get them to their destination quicker, swerving in around traffic only be be in more traffic but 30 ft ahead, that kind of stuff.

I am still really annoyed by the plethora of old people around here that find the 35 mph speed limits too risky and choose to go 25 mph instead on a bright sunny dry day. Gimme a break! I don't do anything dangerous or illegal to get around them though, just curse them quietly.

As an engineer type guy I came up with this to summarize my feelings toward far to many drivers (mostly "not old" but after all I'm not so young myself anymore . . . except for a certain lack of maturity, of course :wink: )

I don't mind too much when drivers violate the laws of common courtesy.

I also don't mind too much when they violate the traffic laws.

I do mind when they try to violate the laws of physics.
