I was kicking around this weekend on the TV looking for something to watch. I said to myself: "self, what's on Speed?" Apparently nothing. It's now Fox sports 1. So what's on? NASCRAP and football, lots of football. I'm excited... :?

All I can say is thank you Velocity. I can still get my car show fix.

Wheeler dealer, and continental sports car series. only thing on now that rally is gone, and imsa will be gone. Which is a shame, I will miss audi and the diesel domination. They just won again down in brazil. Also, what happened to dieseltv, they were on for a season and now gone.

Honestly, I haven't watched Speed much recently anyway. Guess I never developed a taste for <insert country here> touring car series. Somehow, racing a 4-door car seems wrong. Very wrong. Years ago they would show old '60s saloon car races from England, and I really enjoyed the idea of Lotus 23s racing against '63 1/2 Ford XLs... knats vs. elephants, and the racing being close :)

NBC Sports HD has done as good a job as Speed for F1, and sometimes they even fly the announcers to the race (at least, for Monaco). And they got into the classic car auction biz last month with an Auctions America auction from Burbank... Jay Leno "walked across the street from his garage" and joined the announcers for an hour or so.

BTCC has some of the best racing available. Nothing like FWD cars killin' it in an extremely packed field.

I think the real question is where (other than the internet) can you watch "Figure eight school bus" and "Semi truck" racing!?

I am also trying to imagine a Lemons/Chumpcar version of this...

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

No kidding, they've had some awesome racing in that series for many years. 15 or more years ago I used to get a videotape at the end of the season that recapped all the races -- unreal competition, even a Volvo 850 wagon used to be mixing it up.

A bazillion years ago, we actually had some road racing that was incredibly enjoyable in IMSA. I guess it's been 40 years now, but IMSA back then had RS (Radial Sedan -- BFG Radial T/A street tires later Goodyear GT Radials, minor modifications), GTU (under 2.5L), GTO (over 2.5) and GT. The RS and GTU races were 30 laps, and the GT/GTO races were 40, and they used to have 2 GT races with maybe a 1/2 hour pause in between. The sprint race format was engaging and almost always resulted in some close battles -- even people totally uninterested in a race but got dragged to it would end up enjoying it. Local guys like Nick Craw (Miller and Norburn BMW 2002) and Team Highball (Dennis Shaw et al with AMC Pacers) were huge contenders. A typical race day was RS, GTU, then two GT/GTO races.

In the 70s technology was changing so fast in all fields of car design but especially aerodynamics and turbocharging -- really fun time to watch it all evolve in IMSA racing (i.e. the introduction of the 934 then 935s, 320i Turbo, etc).

I used to go to Mid-Ohio in the late 70's and 80s and watch F600, FV, FF, SS Rabbit cup (the Archer Bros were winning) Then GTO/GTU and on up. Jack Roush was racing Mustangs with Scott Pruitt, Willie T Ribbs, Paul Newman et al and Camaros from Greg Pickett and then the big Cars (Castrol Jags, Nissan's, GTP Toyotas). It was fun and loud you could talk to all the drivers

Were you there for the June 1977 IMSA race? I drove up from Atlanta that summer to Mid-Ohio for that race to see the place for the 1st time. Ended up doing a track event there in 1981. I would love to get back there some day for another track event.

EDIT: Just found this link which reminded me that Hobbs won that GT race in the 320i Turbo: http://www.imsahistory.com/Season1977/MidOhio77-1.html

I visited Mid Ohio a number of times in the 1980's. I brought a friend up for his first race and as we were entering the facility via the back/north entrance he was talking about how he wasn't sure if he would enjoy it or not. Just then an entire field of small cars (SCCA regional?) came flying into turn 11. I think it had just rained on the back half of the course (near us) and bunch of car went off right in front of us. I think he decided right then it was interesting.

I have lots of good memories of races during that time period at that track. Including some GTP racing during the golden era and some Indycar before that went to hell.
