I'm driving some back roads on Saturday morning just minding my business when a local sheriff drops in behind me. Boom, blue lights and sirens... So what's a normal American boy that's driving a mustang to do? Yeah, you guessed it.... stab the go fast pedal. The sheriff is right on my tail. That hemi's got a little more umpph than I have but I can't stop now, too deep in. Nice straight coming up, into the gas, quick look at the speedo, holy crap, 105.... Give it up a little for the sweepers, another straight and back into the gas. Coming into a sharp right hander, flick the wheel and the rear end steps out, keep in the gas and get it back under control. OK, I figure I better pull over, can't get away...

The sheriff and I stop and I get out. Walk back to the sheriff and his passenger and I asked, "Was that the shot you wanted?" Terrence, the Pembroke film professor said "yeah, that was great!"

NEVER in my wildest dreams would I have thought to be in a situation where I had blue lights and sirens right on my a$$, going well in excess of the posted speed limits, stop and ask the sheriff if he was ok with "those speeds". He said, "as long as I'm behind you, don't worry about it...." Damn..... Did I just hear that correctly? Yes I did!

So as you may have guessed, this was part of a student film project for UNC Pembroke. The story line was 2 girls, one the local beauty queen and her friend both worked at Food Lion. Not satisfied with life, they rob a convenience store, steal my mustang and then get chased by the cops. We were on the roads surrounding the old L-burg airport and driving with the permission of the local officials and law enforcement. We had some of the students in the class block off intersections and stop traffic before we rolled to keep the roads clear.

From a chase scene filming perspective, they had several runs planed. First loop around the airport had 2 gopros mounted on my mustang, one on the side facing forward and one backward. 2nd run had the gopros on the roof of the mustang. 3rd loop had the gopros on the sheriff's car. After the loop runs, they wanted to focus on some of the corners on the road. No gopros at this point, just some drive bys. 2 items of note here. One of the folks helping had the gopro helicopter. As we were rounding one of the turns, he was hovering around 30feet and then slowly dropped down as we drove by. THAT was an awesome shot. Next, and I have to say the best moment I had all day, we were setting up for a drift around a corner at an intersection. We were ready to roll when a car pulled up. They stopped the car and told us to start the run. As I was setting up for the turn, I looked over at the stopped car and of all things, it was a student driver car. All I could do was laugh as we went into the turn, tires screaming and lights/sirens blazing. I wished I could have heard the conversation between the driver and the instructor. Priceless...

I can't think of a better way to spend a day. I had my 40th high school reunion this past Saturday night. I least I had something to talk about =)

I have a some video I'm working on, too big to post up on youtube right now, so I'll cut it down some. Back later once I have that completed.

Considering you had to be in character for the scene, I am curious if you had a hard time finding a dress that would fit? Did the high heels impact your heel and toe technique? And what color wig did you wear? ;)

I did, but they gave it to me in some funky format, not sure how to take pieces/parts from the video. I asked for the mp4 files this time.

so here's a small portion of the video I have. Good thing I had my gopro as the class wanted to use it, so that cut down on the takes they had planned. Some of the other good stuff is on their very nice HD cameras mounted on tripods. Anyway, here's a sample of the day...

Very cool Rodney now aren't you glad you kept the Bullit? They would never had asked you to do something like this in a 3. :D

The drift was really cool Rodney. When you took off the first time and laid rubber, did the cop just lay back for the shot or could he just not keep up with the awesomeness of the Bullitt?

LOL, he just laid back, I don't think he was expecting it. I'm sure w/ the hemi, I wouldn't stand much of a chance in a head's up run.

I finally received some additional footage on the chase scene. This is taking forever to get the whole movie... Any way, here's a little snippet of what went down. I was working the wheel hard on this to keep the wiggle going. I do like the comments from the students =)
