I know there was a long thread on this a while ago...

Anyway, we upgraded our Tundra last year to 6,000 pounds with NCDMV, b/c they told us that was the highest we could go w/o getting a commercial tag. We probably need about 9,000 to be completely legal when we are towing. Since it's often the case where different DMV offices give different answers, we decided to wait and try later. Chris got the same answer this week when she tried to buy 3,000 extra pounds.

Does anyone have any guidance for us? Do we indeed need a commerical plate if we need 9,000 pounds?

Thanks,
Eric

I just upgraded the Silverado to 9000#. I went to the DMV office off of Wake Forest Road and requested a "Weighted" Plate. She asked me how much and I said 9000#. That was that.

The "weighted" tag is for non-commercial vehicles over 6000lbs. You should be able to just go to the DMV and ask them for one. Of course the cost is more than a regular tag. The cost is also tied to how much weight you have on the tag. We got 10Klbs for the Super truck and it cost $86.

Also I think the "weight" is the gross vehicle weight of the tow vehicle plus the actual weight of the trailer. So if you have a 5000lb GVW truck and 3000lb trailer you need 8000lbs on your registration. I not 100% sure if this is true so you may want to confirm with the DMV when you buy the tag. Of course they may not give you the right info either?

I think the law has changed on the recently? I think you had to have a commercial before but the weighted tag is something new? I could be wrong of course. This is the first vehicle I've had to deal with the weighted tags on.

Shawn

I have the weighted tag, used to have the commercial one. I'm good for 12,000 lbs combined weight, that's a hair over the max the Tundra can officially handle. I'm paying about $100 per year.

I think most of the Commercial tags are gone, all the dump trucks and delivery trucks I see also say weighted.

Scott is right, I also went for 12000 lbs to be on the safe side since it's for the combined total weight.

I was too cheap...You figure on the 2500HD the combined weight would be close to 20,000 # :o

You guys know if this is something that needs to be done for an SUV? Ah. nevermind, I'd rather not know.

There is no weight on my registration, and no one at the DMV ever asked me for any information.

You're exempt if you drive an SUV. That's one advantage of not having a truck.

Mike / all:

I asked this question when I got the Excursion at CarMax. I asked the on-site DMV person. She said that so long as I wasn't a business owner where the business was hauling cars, I could use a plain old license tag.

Meanwhile though, I notice that Matt Graham, who also has a diesel X like mine, has the Weighted tag on his.

Then there's that whole "Not for hire" thing...not sure what that's all about either. I know K&E's Suburban has it on it. For my part I intend to get the weighted tag...I've been told the ticket for not having one, and needing one, is substantial. Mike you might be wise to do the same.

I have it on my van too. It's much more common on rally tow rigs that originate from the NYC/Jersey area. I've read the laws for NC and it's not mentioned in there, so I assume that it's in the laws for those areas. I got them because I sometimes _do_ travel through there towing. If you stick to NC/VA/GA/SC only, I wouldn't bother.
