While I had the bus at my house giving it a washing, the bullitt was at Chris' house. Little did I know this is also the local porta potty location for flying crapping things. My car was covered in sh!t. Got the car home, washed it and then starting buffing out the hood. After a good once over w/ the buffer, I can see where the clear coat is etched and to say I'm not happy is an understatement.

So what are my options here? I'm not opposed to a lite sanding, done that plenty of times, but before I do that, are there any other options I can try? Going to hit the interwebs and look for options there as well.

What compound were you using with the buffer?

This. I think you're going to need something pretty aggressive. I would suggest this instead of sanding, certainly as a first step. Sanding is pretty easy to get wrong, and you do NOT want that.

If you have a Porter Cable buffer or similar, try some Meguiars M105 and a Surbuf microfiber cutting pad. I'm not a huge fan of using my Porter Cable, I just prefer working with the rotary, but this method does work very well, I've tried it.

No substitutions though, if you try some other compound or some other pad, it will not work nearly as well. This is a very specific combo of technique and product. Majestic might have the compound in stock, but I don't think they sell the pads. You'll have to pick those up online.

Bird crap is pretty tough on paint. I have a spot on the CC of my new stripes that won't come out either. :(

I have a mild cutting compound and cutting pad from Majestic. I ran over the hood once last night and it helped, but didn't go deep enough. I think I'm going out for some 3000grit sandpaper today. Watched a youtube video and it worked very well. I've wet sanded the BMW, do I think I can do ok w/ that. This seems to be my only option unless I want to spend a day behind the buffer.

Bringing this post back up for some questions please. I'm heading up to PA for the American Muscle (mustang) car show being held next month. This is right beside Philly and I've never been there, so we're doing the car show on Sunday and Philly on Mon and Tue.

That said, I have a few questions please....

> I want to give the engine bay a quick once over, but I'm not that anal that I want to use a tooth brush on the entire compartment. What's a good way to clean the engine? Granted this beast has a lot of exposed wiring, so a high pressure spray is out of the question. What can I spray on engine bay and engine and rinse off w/ a hose? I don't mind using a soft brush to get some of the surfaces. I just want this presentable, not prefect since the cars not perfect.

> what do I need to look for in Philly? Any place you've found from a cultural standpoint that's a must do?

> place to eat and drink?

I'd appreciate any input....

Rodney,

I think I remember you saying how clean you thought my engine bay in the S2000 was, and all I use is a quick detailer and shop towels. Most of the under hood stuff is just grit and dust and can be managed with regular (not necessarily frequent, maybe 3x/yr) cleanings. Not sure if you have a lot of oil/antifreeze grime, but if so I would imagine dilute Simple Green or Purple Power on a brush or sponge followed by a damp rinse cloth would do the trick with that. More knowledgable types can chime in on the use of hose water, but I would avoid that as much as possible.

Have fun!

No simple green on aluminum (it dulls/pits it).

I've actually had good success under the hood with diluted simple green. As long as the engine isn't hot and the SG isn't allowed to sit for too long, it brings out a nice brightness from the etch...

- Start with cool engine
- Spray down with 4:1 H2O:SG
- Wait 5 minutes
- Spray off with shower/mist setting from hose
- Start the engine and let the water burn off

You can use Simple Green Extreme on aluminum. It's Extreme. And Boeing approved.

Never been there, but this racing car museum has been featured on "What's My Car Worth" and other shows: http://simeonemuseum.org/
