LKQ Clayton has a 2004 Mazda3 sedan and a Mini Cooper. They are both recent arrivals, within the last ~2 days.

The Mazda is wrecked in the right front, the Mini looks like it was wrecked in front AND had an engine fire. Mazda is very complete, Mini has been a bit more stripped but still has lots of good stuff.

Just sharing the love.

I just stopped by there since I was in the area and thought I would check to see on the off chance they had a Miata hood. Beware of this place. They told me they had a Miata on the lot but did not know if it had a hood or not. They then charged me $2 for the privilege to go look for it, but after 2 trips out to hunt for it, there was no Miata. The only thing left was the smashed up hood stuffed inside an old ford van with the roof peeled off. Just for kicks, I asked for my $2 back, but got a solid no. I left laughing and shaking my head as I walked out the door. LKQ

You're clearly an LKQ noob Jordan. The fact is they have NO IDEA what is on the lot at any given time IME. Fortunately they always had at least 5-10 GM J-bodies when I was going regularly, but I never once saw a Miata or a S197 Mustang.

Dude, really? It's worth $2 to walk around and look at all the stuff IMHO. ALL of the "Self Service" junkyards charge a small fee to go on the yard, it's all part of their liability coverage. And hardly any of them keep accurate inventory of the cars that are on the yard, much less the specific parts that are still good on each car- it's just not feasible.

They DID have a miata out there last time I was there- but it was totally picked over. They turn cars over pretty frequently, once they've been on the yard for a couple of weeks they crush what's left.

You pays your money and you takes your chances with these places, if you don't like the $2 fee, you can go to a Full Service junkyard and pay full price.

And VK- I've seen quite a few Miatas come thru there over the last couple of years, and even some later model Mustangs. Seems like they've been getting more and more newish stuff lately. The LKQ in Greenville had an '04 F150 there a couple of weeks ago.

Yeah, I guess that's just the way it is now. The last time I was at that that place was 15 years ago when the tan, overgrown trailer was the office for the yard, and LKQ or whatever it was called at the time was a separate outfit. They had numerous 1st gen rx-7's back then and parts were dirt cheep.

Bret, did you happen to see any W124 MBs? 86-95 E class. I might head out that way today, there's a body shop I want to go interview in Clayton.

I agree that $2.00 is well worth it just to have a place like this around here - my understanding is that they're getting a little rare, for fear of liability. Also, you can sometimes play the staff's lack of knowledge to your advantage. I once pulled a good wiring harness out of a '95 E320 wagon. Guy at the register looked at it and said "whatcha got der, buncha wires?" He charged me $10.00. I sold it on a forum for $350.00 the following week.:)

Not sure if they had any of those specific cars Karl, but they almost always have a few Benz's out there.

There are a few crews of highly organized people in the area that scour the self service yards and sell the parts on Ebay. I talked to one of the groups out in the Durham LKQ- apparently it is one of the guys full time job.

You can sign up for Pull-A-Part and get notified when they add new cars.

With LKQ, you just look at the inventory and see when it was added. If a car is there for a week, expect the really good stuff to be gone. Expect the whole car to be gone after 8 weeks.

I may consider that if I don't stumble across a red one.

How is the DP conversion coming along?

Lovely. My guess is that those guys are among the knuckle draggers that tear apart one layer of a car to get to whatever's down below it. SO many perfectly good interior pieces ruined because somebody's too lazy, or too stupid, to remove a couple of screws.

WOW, talk about a post I didn't need to read. I never knew LKQ published lists like that.
