Watched the Barret Jackson auction last night and the original batmobile came up on the line and it was causing quite a buzz. George should be happy now, it brought 4.2 million. THAT was impressive to watch. 3 interesting items....

> Barris has owned the car since day one
> An "expert" predicted the batmobile would only go for ~200k. Yeah, they were off by a little ;)
> The new owner said is was going to tear down a wall and put the car in his living room

I was a Batman fan back in the day. I remember sitting in the den where the TV was with my mom on Thursday and Friday evenings watching the 2 part Batman show for the week while eating those old school foil covered TV dinners on TV trays. The peas sucked....

Wow, I'm old

I wish I had caught it.

"Barris said he customized the Lincoln into the Batmobile in 15 days at a $15,000 cost."

Whoa. That's impressive.

I'm so out of touch, when I saw that on facebook I thought of the '89 version with Keaton.

waitaminnit.

You mean this guy Barris converted a Lincoln into a Batmobile in 15 days... then sold it for $4.2 million? This is not an original set piece from the show, but a "tribute" car? Wow, someone used to have more money than sense. And now deservedly has less money.

It's the real deal and he's the original builder who built it in 1965.

Oh....OK. Whew. That makes better sense to me. Still wouldn't buy it, though.

<----thought the car in question was an E9 CSL

Three notes about the Batmobile.

1) Barris didn't start with just any Lincoln, FoMoCo gave him the 1955 Lincoln Futura show car as the starting point.
Image

2) Accounting for inflation, that $15,000 budget would be more like $110,000 today.

3) They sold the first production 2014 Corvette a little earlier in the auction. Rick Hendrick bought it for $1,050,000. Exactly 1/4th the price of the Batmobile.

My brother in law's folks lived in Atlanta back in the day when they were filming the Batman show. His Dad would see it every once in a while when they were getting exterior shots.

I was a huge fan of the original show when I was a kid also Rodney so I guess I'm old too. IMO the original car looks the best by a long shot. That's damned impressive to know it was built in just 15 days.

Same here Rodney. Salisbury steak and fake mashed potato TV dinners, Batman, Man from Uncle, etc...

I think Barret Jackson charges a 10% sellers fee for reserve auctions and then a 10% buyers fee, so I suppose they are the ones who really won this thing. $840,000 to sell the thing. So now the buyer hopes there is a bigger fool somewhere, sometime in the future who will pay more than $4.6M plus costs to allow him to profit. Or if he brings it back to B-J, then an even bigger fool that would pay more than $5m just so the guy could break even.

I think I want to run an auction house....

Somehow I don't think you got quite that much for your old Olds.

I still regret selling that car, big mistake. And you're right, my sell price was a little shy of the 350k that 442 sold for 8)

Still doesn't make sense. BJ is as big a made for TV scam as anything going. They are in part responsible for bidding up the price of cars along with their shills on SPEED to the stupid prices. People with more money than brains. It is fun to think of all the people who paid stupid money during the bubble for junk.

Fried Chicken, mashed "potato" like substance and mixed vegetables
