So as winter approaches I find I'm craving less IPA and more Brown, Porter, and Stout. Recommendations?

Lagunitas again. Brown Shugga is awesome, a hoppy brown. The stout I am drinking right now is the great lakes blackout stout. Both are high gravity tho, some careful.

Yeah I'm kind of seasonal as well. Yuenling Black and Tan is amazingly good for a cheap beer. Samual Smith Oatmeat stout is good. Albita Springs Turbo Dog is great and I found it on tap at a Mideastern Resteraunt over looking the water in Little Washington. Makes a great little motorcycle, sports car trip.

If you're ever in Chapel Hill, Milltown is a great place to stop for a pint:

Keep your Brown Shugga, that stuff doesn't agree with me (but it is yummy). I do vote for Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout. That is one very yummy beer - one of my favorites. 22 oz only.

Bell's Java stout is good too, but not as good as the Lagunitas.

Now that winter is upon us, it's Stout and Porter season!

I have been working through a six-pack each of these three beers and all I can say is that they make me really really happy. All bought at Triangle Wine in Morrisville. What's in your fridge?

Breckenridge Vanilla Porter - nice and smooth (Atwater Vanilla Java is a good alternative, but a little too much vanilla)
Black Boss - very well rounded porter
New Holland Dragon's Milk - luxury with a bourbon kick
Orkney Skull Splitter - if you need a kick in the pants (who doesn't sometimes?)
Duck-Rabbit Porter - if you want to stay local-ish
Lonerider True Britt - not easy to find, but worth trying if you find it on tap; probably Lonerider's best offering, Shotgun Betty be damned
Lonerider Deadeye Jack - they used to be available in bottles, but I think it's draught only now, although you may be able to pick up a growler at the brewery
Fullsteam Working Man's Lunch - more good local stuff
Young's Double Chocolate Stout - probably my favorite stout, mellow
Rogue Chocolate Stout - good alternative to Young's, if you like something with a little more kick

Triangle Wine has a great selection, but if you can't find it there, try Sam's Quick Shop, a beer lover's nirvana.

Are you on Untappd?

This. Get it in a growler, then drink it. Then get another one...you know, to amortize the initial cost of the growler.

Their Mad Doc is also quite good. It's worth the drive-by to the brewery to see what's on tap.

Trophy Brewing had a Slingshot coffee porter when the fair was going on. It was so good. I should have gotten more growlers. :(

I need to make it over there some time soon. I've been wanting to try Pistols at Dawn.

Also very good, but supply has been erratic. They've only had it once in 22oz. bottles, not on tap, in the 3 times I've been by since June. Maybe call in advance.

This time of year, they may be getting some Beer With No Name ready…that is a very good Belgian Dubbel.

This is one of the few reasons I don't like living in a small town. Our selection is limited, unless I want to drive quite a while I have to be happy with Harris Teeter, Lowes and Fresh Market. All are pretty much feed by the big name guys. I did just by a 12 pack of New Castle Cabbie, I'm going to try it out this evening, I'll keep you posted.

According to Wikipedia, the 2012 estimate for Greenville was over 87,000 people for Greenville. If that is classified as a small town, Elm City must be microscopic at around 1,200. Sh*t, we are still getting The Ed Sullivan Show live!
