Pete, thanks for posting this. An excellent way to share during the holidays!
If you're thinking of doing this, may I suggest that you try to provide gifts for the older children (10-12 or older), particularly the girls. I joined a group from church to help with the distribution of toys at the Rescue Mission two years ago, and I drew the late afternoon shift. That meant that the gifts appropriate for the older kids were long gone. Handing the parent of a 12 year old a bag of gifts appropriate for a 6 year old was embarrassing for the volunteers, but more importantly disappointing for the parents and children who had waited in line for a couple of hours.
Now on a different note -- the VIR holiday laps charity event is this Friday, Nov 9.
http://virnow.com/files/2012/10/Holiday-laps.pdfHere's what it says:
"VIR in conjunction with Danville, VA Salvation Army and WAKG/WBTM
will be holding our annual Holiday Laps on November 9, 2012 from
9:00am to 4:00pm.
You can drive the historic full course track of VIR by making a
donation of $25 non-perishable food items, unwrapped toys or
money. Each session will be $25 and will last approximately 20 to 25
minutes. These donations are tax deductible. All donations collected
will benefit the local Salvation Army and their winter/holiday projects.
Each car can sign up for two sessions initially. Additional sessions may
be available throughout day.
Come out and enjoy the fun and help those in need this holiday
season."
In no way is this a track event, HPDE, time trial, etc. You're behind a pace car and speeds are limited, though the pace seems to be quicker in the early morning groups (get there by 8:00 or 8:30, regardless of what the schedule says). Probably best to hook up with a marque club that you know and run in their group. I'll be going with HCMC. We'll run a few sessions early in the day, and then proceed to the go-kart track, where Mark Barnes' new Boss 302 will do him no good whatsoever
