Richard: What type of SIM are you using in your N4s? I am using my N4 on AT&T proper (contract is up in January) and I have about a 50% success rate with something working on the first try (I'm looking at you Youtube). I know T-Mobile has less coverage than AT&T, but they do have HSPA+42 in the Triangle so it'll be 4x faster than AT&T.
My ST SIM uses T-Mobile. I think ST is/has stopped selling the AT&T re-branded service. I think you might be able to find some of the older AT&T ST SIMs sold on eBay at higher prices if you must have AT&T.
Otherwise, I just used a SIM cutter to cut the ST provided SIM down to the right size for my N4 and it works fine (voice, text, data). I will say I am not a heavy data user. So I am not trying to stream Netflix movies, or tether. For me it is mostly email, google maps, google searches, a few other likely low data applications. I am not trying to push the envelope regarding ST "unlimited" data. I believe they will eventually throttle you.
I have never had AT&T so I can't compare to their local coverage. Coverage at the house was important, but we have used Verizon, Sprint and now T-Mobile at my house. I am not in the middle of nowhere (off NC55 a stone throw from I-40), but our coverage here has never been good. Verizon wasn't too bad. Sprint was not good at all and T-Mobile is somewhere in between. Otherwise I have been happy with the coverage.
