You can't force yourself to use 3G data only unless if it's a hardware limitation with the phone. Every cell provider has stood up 4G/LTE towers and it only switches to 3G if there are no 4G towers in the area (see: West Virginia). You can't save any money on a plan by forcing yourself to 3G data only.

Richard: What type of SIM are you using in your N4s? I am using my N4 on AT&T proper (contract is up in January) and I have about a 50% success rate with something working on the first try (I'm looking at you Youtube). I know T-Mobile has less coverage than AT&T, but they do have HSPA+42 in the Triangle so it'll be 4x faster than AT&T.

Well, the thing is, the phones we have (Droid X2's) are 3G phones, so we sort of are limited unless we buy new/different phones.

In looking at many of the cheaper prepaid/all-in-one plans, they're limited to 3g anyway, specifically Page Plus, which uses VZW network. The interweb wisdom says that our X2's are compatible with Page Plus without any trouble, so I'm really thinking that might be the way to go, at least for now.

My ST SIM uses T-Mobile. I think ST is/has stopped selling the AT&T re-branded service. I think you might be able to find some of the older AT&T ST SIMs sold on eBay at higher prices if you must have AT&T.

Otherwise, I just used a SIM cutter to cut the ST provided SIM down to the right size for my N4 and it works fine (voice, text, data). I will say I am not a heavy data user. So I am not trying to stream Netflix movies, or tether. For me it is mostly email, google maps, google searches, a few other likely low data applications. I am not trying to push the envelope regarding ST "unlimited" data. I believe they will eventually throttle you.

I have never had AT&T so I can't compare to their local coverage. Coverage at the house was important, but we have used Verizon, Sprint and now T-Mobile at my house. I am not in the middle of nowhere (off NC55 a stone throw from I-40), but our coverage here has never been good. Verizon wasn't too bad. Sprint was not good at all and T-Mobile is somewhere in between. Otherwise I have been happy with the coverage.

Bringing up this old thread in which we discussed the Google Nexus 4 phone. I think for an unlocked GSM phone, it has always been a killer deal. Google just cut the price by $100 for both models. Speculation is that they are clearing inventory before they release a new phone this fall. So a great deal just got better. New prices...

8 GB = $199
16 GB = $249

Wow. That's a done deal for me. I might just go forward with it. I bought the bigger sim card from Straight Talk to go in my current AT&T phone but the plan was to upgrade phones towards the end of the year.

But $100 off is an amazing deal.

Mike, any feedback on your ST/ Nexus setup? Works well?

ST had stopped selling the AT&T SIMs until recently. They're back now. See details in this article. I use an iPhone 4 with an AT&T ST SIM and the service is as good as when I had the same phone on AT&T directly with the exception that MMS does not work reliably. The price break is more than enough to justify the loss of MMS to me.

Can you believe it, I just bought a N4 2 weeks ago. Kendra' old GNex failed after getting sweat soaked, so it was time to pull the trigger. $100 cheaper, crap.

Love the combo of N4 + ST (ATT).

Check the Play store. You may be eligible for a refund if you bought it within 2 weeks.

Well crap, it was actually 3 weeks ago -- Aug 5th. Oh well. Thanks for the pointer.

At $199, I'm almost tempted to buy a spare just to have on hand for the inevitable. But that would be dumb, because I'll probably want whatever they come out with next. Will be interesting to see how they improve on something so good. I can't point at one thing really that I can say "yeah I wish they would fix that".

FYI - inductive charging kicks ass. I'll never buy another phone I need to plug in.

Just FYI for anyone thinking about the Google Nexus 4, the 8gb phones are SOLD OUT and the internet wisdom is that they will not get any more. The 16gb phones are still available.

I've got to do something new, and was getting ready to pull the trigger on 2 new 8gb phones, but I guess I'll have to spend an extra $100 and get 2 of the 16gb before they sell out.

If anyone is still following along, I broke down and bought a 16gb Nexus 4 from Google store, then bought an AT&T Sim + service card from Straight talk, got them delivered yesterday, got everything set up and ported my number from Verizon and it's working, mostly.

Still can't get MMS picture texting to work, I've tried several different APN settings, including the one from the ST website and the one that the ST rep gave me over the phone, as well as a couple of different ones from the internets- but it's still not working.

Can anyone (Whitney?) help me out with the APN settings on their setup, assuming using a Nexus 4 on ATT ST with Droid v4.3.

Thanks!!

FWIW, it looks like people are selling the 8gb Nexus 4 on Fleabay for about the same price (or more) than you can get the 16gb for directly from Google. Even the 16gb is selling for more than they sell for on Google.
How hard is it to shop around a little????

EDIT: Mike, care to share your inductive charger experience?

Bret, coincidentally we just did the EXACT same thing yesterday, except we didn't port a number (not sure that has anything to do with it). MMS seemed to work mostly right away for us, using the following that was provided from the ST web registration interface:

New Access Point definition (anything "not set" or unspecified was the default). Make sure to delete the default, existing APN profile.
Name: StraightTalk
APN: tfdata
Proxy: not set
Port: 80
Username: not set
Password: not set
Server: not set
MMSC: http://mms-tf.net
MMS Proxy: mms3.tracfone.com
MMS port: 80
MCC 310
MNC 410
Authentication Type: not set
APN type: not set
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
Bearer: unspecified
MVNO type: none

Good luck!

I'm not Mike, but I did ask him the same question the other day - he's using the one from the Google Play store.

I'm trying this one first: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EKJ8Z0E/ref ... 25410_item

Should be here within the next couple days - I'll let you know if it's worth a darn...

Thanks Dustin, those are the exact same APN settings I've got, but no love on the MMS.

While not a huge deal, I'd really like to get it up and running somehow, and I don't think ST will be alot of help. Problem with this setup seems to be that each provider (Google and ST) is quick to point the finger at the other when there's an issue like this, and unless you know exactly whose fault it is, it's hard to pin them down and force them to help.

Looking forward to the report on the inductive charger.

Get the mms thing worked out? Mine worked fine from day 1 also. Have you tried searching online for others with the same problem? Community support for ST is pretty good.

I love the official Nexus charger. I also have a "flat" one and it works fine, but the round orb style is just more stylish. I really want one for my car too... hmm, need to see if anyone has done that.
