from the edge of space. Brought to you, of course, by Red Bull. Should be a 3-hour ascent, but then a 10-minute jump. Could be cool with all the cameras on board.

Yeah, saw that on the news should be pretty cool. I assume everyone has seen the record that these guys are trying to break, Joe Kittinger's jump from 102,800 ft 52 years ago:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw8OJJQ_hgk

Funny how both the highest sky dive, nearly 20 miles, and deepest submarine dive, nearly 7 miles, were both achieved in 1960 and both feats have only been attempted to repeat in 2012 52 years later. For those that didn't already know, humans went to Challenger Deep the deepest part of the ocean in Trieste in 1960 and this feat wasn't achieved again until earlier this year when James Cameron (yes that James Cameron) did it again in March.

Oh and in other human achievement news, Space X broke new ground today by launching the first commercial resupply mission to the ISS. Assuming success, it marks the return of American capability to send supplies and soon people to the ISS and back. We're no longer dependent on the Russians, yeah!

I have been a fan of Kittinger for awhile. He put out a biography a few years ago and it was an interesting read. He has done a lot in aviation after leaving the air force as well and his mentor in the Air Force was the guy behind some of those crazy rocket sled tests you can find on Youtube. Even the stuff they did back then was a bit "shoestring" and since then there has been at least one person killed by trying to break the record. Kittinger is helping with this recent effort and he was quoted as saying that "records exist to be broken" or something like that. He sure has kept this one long enough!

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Helmet cam video is out

Very cool. If only he held the free fall for 20 more seconds he'd have that record too. Oh, well...he'll just have to jump again 8)

It is a very interesting. Wonder if it is a commentary on what has become more important in our society in the last couple of generations.

Are you saying standing in line for the latest iPhone isn't important? :brow:

Apparently hiring people to stand in line for you is more important...

I was thinking more along the "lines" that true achievment is not pursued, (perhaps not rewarded), Our society has been dummed down and there is more excitement and appreciation generated for some moron that can sing a song, or be and idiot on a reality tv show. We celebrate the mediocre. It's all Remchak's fault.

I have heard about it, I am proud to say I haven't seen it. If I don't schedule it on my DVR I don't see it.

I watched about 15 mins of one episode and was just amazed what passes for TV these days. I've seen worse, but not much worse!

I think it has more to do with our government choosing to spend the money on welfare instead of scientific research.
