Liz and I are buying an Impreza rally car in PA two weekends from now. A few questions...

If I drive the rally car back, should "NC tag applied for" be okay?

How do we do the title? I'm guessing he signs it, we bring it back with us and then we sign it and get it notarized.

For insurance, what are those of you with rally cars doing? Liability only? Full coverage, except for during a rally event? Something else?

It's a 1994 chassis, so for inspection, it's safety only/ no emissions bs, correct? (It has a 2000 2.5RS engine, dash and wiring.)

take the tags off the black car with the registration. If you get stopped tell them you just bought it.

I bought my 240sx from PA, the PA DMV is open on Saturday's. We took the car there, I gave the DMV some $$ (Under $100) and got a 30 day PA Plate and a PA title. It was actually pretty easy

> Paging Cline.... This all depends on your comfort level if the car becomes a complete loss. If you're driving it back to NC, I'd have some sort of insurance on it.

If it was NC the sellers signature is the one that needs to be notarized not the buyers. I'd have a bill of sale to sign as well.

In NC when doing a motor swap the vehicle has to meet the standards of which ever is newer the motor or chassis. So if the inspector wants to make a case of it then you are OBDII.

The seller's signature is typically the one that is notarized, because it's releasing ownership of the car to another person.

Should be spelled out on the back of the PA title how what needs to be done, that or PA DMV website probably has some info on it.


As for the license plate + insurance- there are several ways to do it. If it's going to be strictly a Rally car (i.e.- not licensed for street driving), then you could probably just use the tag from another car to get it home, keeping in mind that IF you get caught, you'll probably get a ticket. But there's no good legit way to do it IMHO.

As far as insurance, I'd call your agent and tell them you're adding a car to your policy and they should be able to do that over the phone- they don't care if it's titled/licensed at the time- in fact, you want to get insurance coverage before titling/licensing the car anyway.

Rally cars have to do transit stages, so they have to be registered to drive on the street.

Also, I always call my insurance agent and give him the VIN before I pick up a car, even if it's just leaving a phone message on a weekend. He's ok with that. I plan to discuss the whole deal with him before we go get it, just wondering what other rally car owners are doing for coverage.

So, bill of sale (I always get one of those) and get his signature notarized, but ours don't matter. Anything else?

A few weeks ago I bought an older from someone local, but the car was still titled in SC. There was no place on that title for a notary seal because apparently SC does not require it. So the seller just signed it, no notary. I took it to local DMV and they took it without any difficulty.

This may be overkill, but if you really want to be on the safe side, have the seller sign/notarize a NC MVR-63 automobile power of attorney form.

I financed the purchase of a car from out of state a while back and the bank required this.
In the event, that the title transfer isn't done quite right, it gives you the authority to sign for the seller on any necessary legal docs.

F*cking DMV...

A few years ago I got burned because I did *not* have a non-notary-state title notarized. I had to fedex the title back (think it was VA? PA?) and have the seller get the signature notarized.

When I bought the p-car in Fla (a non-notary state) last week, we went to a Fedex u-ship place in a strip mall and I had a notary stamp the title in some empty space just to be sure.

I'd like to hear a definitive answer on this question myself, since it obviously seems to be somewhat up to the DMV office whether to accept a non-notarized title from a non-notary state.

I'd say if you have concerns about that have the seller sign and notarize the NC MVR-63 form that I mentioned and if there is a problem, no need to go back to the seller, you can just sign for them.

Seller shouldn't have a problem with it, since all he/she is doing is giving you POA in regards to the title and any additional signatures that might be needed.
