Received this email from Greg Romano about a car show coming up on the 20th. Interesting concept he has going on w/ garages and attached condos. Message from Greg is below. Might be worth going to see this.

So which is better as a business concept, the condo thing above, or this:

http://www.woodwardwarehouse.com/

The idea of having your garage with your condo has obvious benefits. The idea of having your cars stored *away* from home but in a social atmosphere *also* has benefits. And obviously one is more about storage and the other is about storage *and* work space, so they aren't directly comparable. But for the guy who has a place to park and work on a couple cars, but finds himself with *more* than a couple cars, the warehouse idea is neat. Especially if you're already somewhat married to your real-estate. If you're looking for new real-estate, however, the condo idea is neat as well.

I think the real question is if they allow anyone to work on a 1958 Plymouth Fury named Christine at any of these locations. :)

To post more on topic.... For me neither of these appeal to me, but I can see how they could be successful. To me they both scream "lifestyle" and I am more about functionality. I would be more interested in discussing the best deals on a good torque wrench than discussions about waxes. I can see a true shared workspace (think Techshop but for cars only) that is more focused on tools, and workspaces than "display" being more appealing to me. It has been years since I have seen the movie Christine, but if I remember correctly the car was rebuilt at a co-op auto workshop in which each guy had a bay for your car and I think you brought your own tools.

There used to be (early 1980's or so) a business (Frey Racing) in the Santa Clara/San Jose, CA area in an old warehouse type building that had enclosed stalls for racers to store and work on their race or project cars. It was NOT fancy. There may have been some shared equipment but I don't recall. They also sold parts and I don't recall what else other than I met Carroll Smith there during a "book signing" event and still own the autographed copy of Engineer to Win that I bought that day (1984 or 1985). The Freys sold the business to sail around the world as I recall.
