In terms of looks, they're usually not as cool as their sedan counterparts. But they're often pretty close, and since manufacturers have gotten good at making them weigh almost exactly the same, the performance is identical. So when you add in the additional features, they get more attractive to *me* in many cases, anyway.
And by "features" I mean that they not only have more interior space, but often get nice things like the ability to open the hatch *or* just the rear window. Just opening the rear window can be very useful for dropping some groceries in easily. And that "more room" is in a very usable way compared to a sedan. Try getting even ONE bicycle in a typical mid-size sedan that has folding rear seats. Often that's barely possible, whereas you can often pile three bikes inside a wagon (I'm talking with the front tire removed).
But these days your typical econo 5 door hatchback really is a wagon, which has helped make the more mid-size and even fullsize cars acceptable in wagon form. And somehow, to *me*, the wagon is WAY cooler than anything resembling a minivan. Now, that said, I really do like the sliding rear doors on minivans, but that's it. I just can't bring myself to ever own one. I did buy a full size Sprinter passenger van, however. It's not cool, but it's got SO much damned room and functionality and gets better mileage than most minivans anyway, so I'll drive it and not care.
And yes, all this is subjective. I'm not arguing with you, Vincent. We like what we like...
