Randy Pobst does a lap of Laguna Seca , in a subaru BRZ. Apparently you want it over a scion. Because the car handles better

He compared the BRZ to the new v6 mustang. Said the mustang had more grunt, but the BRZ handled better.

What happens when you compare the gt? You know the one you can have for the same price as the brz?

Since we're talking about new cars this is more appropriate.

I read the Motor Trend magazine comparison in the dentist's office. As I recall for his test Randy was a little quicker in the BRZ than in the FRS due to more oversteer with the FRS. As I recall one of two has stiffer springs according to early information. Anyone recall which one? Balance can be changed for autocross with shock tuning or the F or R bar change rule now in effect.

First time I met Randy was at one of the original Pro Solos. He drove the Rabbit from Florida to California following the series. As I recall he had some sort of stuffed animal hanging out the hatch. Also, as I recall (it was around 1984 or so) he ended up in elimination rounds running against a VERY well driven Cobra (real not replica). Randy "probably" won but I don't remember. One of the drivers of the Cobra was Mary Rice (I forget her current name). Mary was one of the first really fast female autocrossers at the National level. In addition to MANY ladies class National Championships she came very close to winning Open class in CP I think.

Found the "answer" in Car and Driver. It looks like the BRZ would be the better starting point for a Stock class car since the current anti roll bar allowances (front or rear) and shock tuning should allow tuning out any understeer.

"At the limit, you’ll find the key difference between the Subaru and the Scion. Go screaming into a turn or hop on the gas too early exiting one, and the Subaru simply understeers—perhaps for the benefit of drivers familiar with the brand’s all-wheel-drive products. The Scion uses softer springs and stiffer shocks, and it has a sensitivity to driver inputs that makes it feel alive. Too much or too little throttle upsets the Scion’s balance, sending the car into an easily controlled drift. Its behavior reminds us of the dearly departed first-generation Honda S2000. It’s not impossible to get the Subaru to oversteer—deliberately timed and moderated inputs will coax the tail out—it’s just not going to catch you by surprise. In either car, though, the transition from cornering to drifting is gradual, and the low curb weight—about 2800 pounds—helps make it easy to rein in a slide before you tailwhip your neighbor’s mailbox."

Car: Front OE Spring Rate:
Subaru BRZ 27 N/mm (153 lbs/in)
Scion FR-S 23 N/mm (131 lbs/in)

Rear OE Spring Rate:
Subaru BRZ 34 N/mm (195 lbs/in)
Scion FR-S 37 N/mm (211 lbs/in)

Lots of "seat of the pants" info about these cars is not indicative of the actual real world. There has been a bit of argument about which will be better for stock autocross. After adding a big front bar to both cars, the Scion should still rotate better. The Scion will also be lighter by a little bit.

Front camber is slightly adjustable in stock class (about -1.5 degrees total). Rear toe is adjustable, but nothing else (other than wiggling within the confines of the OEM tolerances). Tuning will be done with shocks, rear toe and tire pressures.

With the Torsen limited slip, I can't see anyone ever wanting to add more rear bar in stock class. There are a few front sway bar options available right now (most are solid 20mm), but most everyone is waiting on a hollow front bar that is bigger.

20mm? That's strange that Cusco's only making a hollow bar that's only 2mm larger than a stock FR-S and a solid one that's actually 2mm smaller than the BR-Z's 16mm.

Wow, Scion depreciation kicking in already I guess, although who really knows the history of this used FR-S with 2000 miles.

It's in South Florida: the land of zero corners and zero elevation change.

(driving into the ocean/everglades doesn't count)
