Update.
It's been a busy few days in the shop. Jason and I installed a set of long tube headers on his S197, and today Kendt, Ryan, and I removed the drivetrain in Kendt's Miata to make room for the future 5.0. However I did get one day to work on my own project, my barrel stove.
For those unfamilar with the concept, basically a 55 gallon drum is used to build a DIY wood heater. NT and others sell a kit made from cast iron to add a door, legs, damper, etc. They sell another kit to adapt a second drum on top of the first which acts as a heat exchanger increasing the thermal effieciency by a factor of two.
Ryan sourced me a couple of barrels several weeks back, and I ordered the kit to start putting it all together. The barrels were open-ended so I had to weld the ends on, which was actually easier than working with an enclosed drum.
To make it last longer, I added 12 fire bricks to the inside of the bottom barrel where the actual fire will be. I added some steel tabs to keep the brick in place also.
The pics below show where it stands right now. Basically the next step is to build a fire and burn-off all the existing paint on the drums. After that is complete I can re-paint the drums with high-temp grill paint and plumb the chimney in place. Once that is done it will be ready to use.
