I would like to have an Instant messaging system between my employess that would encompass both computer and phone but be limited to only them. Is that out there?

Isn't your office kind of small? They can't get up and deliver the message in person?

Plenty.

You can roll your own Jabber server (what Google Chat uses) or use Lync if you're a Microsoft house.

Does that even work on the 14th fairway at Brook Valley?

My "office" encompasses a wide area. Approx. 1003 miles between the locations. YOu also want to be able to message with out everyone in front of you hearing. And I would like to get messages on the fairway as well, or while driving race cars in the pouring rain.

depending on the phone used, the client wont stay running in the background. eg you will go offline. my droid the app does not stay up and running... it will log out after a while (yahoo and aim) I dont use either enough to troubleshoot. I know the Iphone 3 would kill the messenger as soon as you log out. iphone 4 picked up multi tasking, but no idea how well it works.

What ever happened to email or text messaging?

I'd do what Jason said, have someone set up a jabber server for you. The server and client are free, and it doesn't take much of a box to run it on.

I would definitely go with a private jabber/xmpp server. There are plenty of desktop and mobile clients for every platform. With a little bit of work (or money), you may be able to get messages to forward via SMS when a user is offline. I've seen at least one person do this via iChat and applescript, but there has got to be a better way.

You can do that with IM+ if you leave the client running on another machine in "Push" mode.
