Hey Guys,

What is the minimum required for a track car to be street legal in NC?

Pass all the items on the safety inspection?

Thanks!
Scott

hmm, not sure why you even ask this.

Basically, if the car is legal per NC state inspection regs, then you are considered "street legal".

In other words, if your car cannot pass NC state inspection, then you can't get it registered, so it's not street legal.

Well... We built our chumpcar since it was last inspected....

It is titled, insured, and has all the safety stuff. Comparing the NC safety checklist, it is only missing headlights.

Just not sure I want to do to jail over testing this thing few a few weeks on the street.

You used to be able to inspect a car for daylight use only, don't know if that still exists...

I'm not aware of such a thing Rodney, no lights would be instant failure. your typical race car would lack dot seatbelts, exhaust, horn, window wipers. I'm sure there are others but those are the obvious ones I could see a cop knowing and hassleing you over.

Ask Randy. He's been driving his Chump Car on the street for last six weeks or so. Of course he's been stopped three times already, but no citations...yet.

The only thing he doesn't have on Sean's checklist is DOT belts. I don't see why that's an issue since a 5-point is superior, but since when do all the laws make sense right?

So I went over the NC checklist and all I'm missing are the headlights, cat, and DOT belts. Everything else is good. So... I think I'll be OK.
I'm sure a cop on a bad day might find something I didn't know about but I think I'm ok.

I have the SFI padding on all the halo area and I would have to move 8" before my head would hit it in all directions.

BTW. First time really driving this thing after getting it all back together and it is AWESOME. You can feel the difference in weight and the engine r&r seemed to really smooth it out. Muffler is a little louder than I hoped but I think it will work for the first race. VIR North is just around the corner!

BTW, Vincent. I got your package on Monday. Thanks!!

Don't forget silly stuff like parking brake that holds on an incline and functional horn. I had a car that was pretty much track only, but street legal, and the first time I took it in for inspection it failed for horn (Sparco steering wheel at the time) and parking brake not properly adjusted....otherwise since it was an OBD1 car and pre 1996, it only needed the safety inspection so they looked at the wipers, headlights, signals, and brake lights and that was pretty much it.

They're also supposed to do a visual check to make sure it's got the correct emissions equipment (i.e.- catalytic converter, etc). Many shops don't check, or don't even really know what the car should have on it, but most will catch it if there's a straight pipe where the cat should be.

We are sitting at 2300lb in full race ready trim w/o driver. Where you guys at? There are a few more parts on the car we can cut on and remove. We have a small list of items to hit this weekend but should be ready.

One of the list things to finish up is lighting...

I think by the time the inspection is due again, I won't need to drive it around town anymore. Soo...

i dunno if its street legal.. i would assume so, 630hp is not out of the ballpark for a built 427.
if it is, that would be one hellacious car, coilovers, slicks, big brakes.. strong drivetrain.. mother of mercy.. the lap times at vir would be stupendous. :sing:

Keep cutting. IIRC we're at 2120ish? And looking for more.

This was with no hatch, tr3 wheels, skinned hood, etc. Some simplified wiring, cut brackets where we could find them. Also no ABS, but with PS.
