Like it or not Paypal is almost a standard at this point. I begrudgingly got a Paypal account a couple of years ago. What I did to protect myself was tie it to a bank account that is separate from my others. That account has a very limited amount in it. I transfer funds to that account as I need it. A little more work. But if I ever get screwed over it's for a few hundred dollars. Not my main bank accounts or credit cards.
That said you still have to be careful where and whom you deal with. I've bought and sold on CF in the used parts section, a few thousand dollars at this point. I've never had a problem. I've bought off Ebay here and there with no problems. I've also bought from some suppliers that prefer Paypal from time to time. No problems there either.
Craig's List is sadly a scary place. I just avoid it. Just don't tell Craig's List users that AX sucks and the local clubs make sucky courses. Someone on Craig's List might report you for bad behavior and ban you...
