Our old E46 and E39 are in need of new windshields. The E46 has a large crack, which we've been living with for years actually, and the E39 is so sand-blasted I can barely see in afternoon sun.

I'd like to get 2-3 quotes - both cars have automatic windshield wipers which I realize makes the cost higher, but I'm not sure I can live with this for any longer. It's still cheaper than buying another used car, right?

Suggestions?

Raleigh Glass and Mirror did a good job on my 2001 Mustang in the parking lot at work.

I've always used Safelite, they have always been price competitive and the really nice thing is the guarantee is essentially nationwide as they are almost everywhere in the US, so if you have a lifetime repair/replace guarantee and you move to California you can still get it covered.

I got great service from Triumph autoglass when I replaced the windshield in the 240Z. Same price as Safelite, but they could schedule me sooner. I think either choice would do fine.

Safelite shows me having to go to them, but I'd rather have someone come to me. Work from home and hourly wage worker, so it costs me more to lose work time.

The warranty - I assume that doesn't cover "sand blasting" over time so probably doesn't do me much good. I am not moving to California!

I can not legally suggest to my clients who they have their glass repaired by but I will state what I always tell them.

"I take my cars to Interstate Glass because I have never had a problem that they didn't take of in an excellent manner"

Here is how I really feel. They are locally owned, I can call the owner if there is a problem. I will not slander my self but some folks spend more advertising than they do buying quality glass.

I think the Raleigh number is 919 863 1269 or 1 800 282 4121 they have several places, putting one in cary soon I think. BTW we just got a windshield for the CHUmp car from them, guaranteed for 5mph more top speed!

Brian,

my E39 also needs a new windshield, so if you wouldn't mind, please follow-up once you get yours done.

I have looked around a little for some quotes, and it seems to me that most online auto glass quote systems suck big time.

I'll be paying out of pocket for my replacement.

Thanks!

Triumph came to my home, done in 20 minutes. Of course I had already demolished the old glass, so maybe 30-45 if it was R&R.

Weird, I've never had to go to them, they've always come to me. Do you live on the moon? :) No, I doubt they would cover sand blasting, I've used them mostly for windshield repair which I've been very happy with.

Aren't you closer to smithfield? Interstate has a shop there too, I promise I don't work for them!

Yeah, I work in Smithfield.

The deal is, my windshield is coming loose from the car. It's a bonded windshield, and the top corners are not stuck anymore, so at high speeds I get alot of wind noise, and I can actually push the windshield out a bit from the inside. I would be fine if someone could just remove the glass, clean off the old sealant (urethane?) and then re-install it, but the quotes I got for doing that were not that far off from just replacing it, so there you have it. Besides that, everyone I've spoken to about R&R'ing the glass say they can't guarantee it won't break when they try to take it out.

I was hoping one of these places would be willing to give better pricing for a CASH job, but they all seem to get their glass from the same place and most of the quotes I got were within $30-40 of each other, unless I specified OEM BMW glass.

I'm actually thinking about trying to R&R it myself, I figure if I break it trying to get it out, then I'll just pay someone to replace it. What's the worst that could happen... /? :)

(reminds me of Bowie Jr's "hey ya'll, watch this".)
