Anybody been there and done that? Anything cool to do besides look at cars? Liz and I are going on Friday.

Also, anything to avoid, like driving through or parking in certain areas or whatever?

We're also visiting her family in Canton, going to the Plymouth ice festival, walking around Ann Arbor and maybe touring The Big House, and whatever else she comes up with.

Any other suggestions?

Wow. The signal-to-noise ratio has reached zero.

The Henry Ford Museum is really cool.

Many years ago, I visited Ford Credit Corp in Dearborn on a business trip. The afternoon before my meetings, I took in the Henry Ford Museum. The afternoon after the meetings, I decided I'd like to drive the famous Woodward Ave. My Hertz map showed a very direct route down Michigan Ave to the downtown end of Woodward Ave. I got into my Mercury Topaz rental and got on my way around 5:30 PM.

(btw, this is a story about what NOT to do)

The trip started well - I passed Fairlane Ford, and a Forza dealer in the first couple of miles. Should have stopped there. Anyway, 50 stoplights later I was getting into a pretty run down area. Started slowing down way before red lights so that I would not have to come to a complete stop. Finally got stopped by a light. A jacked up Monte Carlo pulled up next to me and the driver honked his horn. He was about 10 and grinning ear to ear. The light turned green, and he turned left and I noticed there was no license plate on the car, and then the car full of older teens following him pulled by and they all gave me dirty look. A few minutes later I passed the old Tiger Stadium and then got to the downtown end of Woodward. Woodward Ave, at least downtown, was a similarly rough area. Also, they had just milled the road, so it was as rough as the neighborhood looked. It was getting dark.

I drove past some interesting landmarks, like the original Model T factory, and GM HQ, and I wasn't carjacked or anything. But I didn't see any factory engineers street racing either. Guess I was 20 years too late for that. I kept going north until I got to 10 Mile Rd, and then took that loop road back to my hotel in Dearborn.
