There are so many good choices for this one, please title it for me.

"Its only time, money, effort, and . . . emotion!"

"Normally my skill and luck are excellent . . . who did I piss off?"

"Damn valves . . . time for a rotary"

Scott, really bad news after all the effort you put into this project! Do you know what the cause(s) was/were?

Bummer!!!!!

Scott,
I had a piston that looked much like that in the turbo motor I ran in my old datsun 510. I blew the doors off a turbo Chrysler only to have the boost drop from 22 lbs. to 2 lbs. It also had a dead miss after that. It made 200 Hp at the rear wheels from a 1600 cc motor at 18 lbs of boost. Great fun while it lasted.

Scott, is this the "new" engine? That really sucks if it is. :(

You have your sentence structure wrong:

That should read "It *was* my new engine" and now it reads "It *is* my old engine."

I've only taken it apart, not done a real autopsy yet. It was supposed to be a blown head gasket,so I pulled the head to make sure no water was sitting in a cylinder to "ruin" it.

Imagine my suprise!

Yeah, a piece of a valve did hit a water passage!

Eeeck.
Saw you exit the track yesterday, smelling the burning antifreeze I thought "head gasket" too.
Eeeck.
Tough luck, just when it seemed to have turned the corner ...

Glutton for punishment

Wow, I was not expecting that big hole in the piston either. The head looks like a goner, but is the block salvagable? That makes my brain hurt...

I would come up with a funny title but damn, that hurts too much, especially having done the same thing to an MR2 years ago.

Block: Probably salvageable with a sleeve, that requires honing all 4 cylinders as well. It should be good to go with that work only. I will have to re-ring as well, might "upgrade" to Total Seal rings (doh, just got off the phone, should have ordered rings with the piston).

Head: total loss, I've decided to buy "new." When I save up the money, I'll order it built (all new parts), ported, oversized valves, etc. Delivered to my door. Just add water...

rotating mass: 3 pistons good, 3 rods good. Need to replace the ones from cylinder #3. Just ordered a replacement piston. $110 + shipping directly from Wiseco (last one in the warehouse).

Crankshaft? Will have to check it. Machine shop reports high probability of damage/bending. Time will tell.

This probably will equate to a full re-build otherwise (all new gaskets, etc). Hopefully the oil pump didn't injest any metal and ruin itself (another $60 there). I'd expect needing to replace the bearings, but who knows? That will be another $70-80.

Engine will be out and disassembled this week for final diagnosis. Might not keep the car off the road for too long.

Scott
