Okay, I want to try this question one more time...

I remember a message on the email list many months ago about interest in a communal garage in Wake Forest. Does one already exist? I know there is one in Greensboro, but I am interested in one that is closer. Is there any interest from the membership here? I know Jim Diesel and I have been bouncing the idea around on more than one occasion.

Any leads people can forward to me would be greatly appreciated.

I would be interested in the idea, but haven't heard of one nearby (triangle).

Okay here's the deal: I am willing to take the lead on getting one rolling, but I need some outside expertise. Can someone give me a contact on someone to speak to about acquiring some property (like an old gas station)? I have no idea whether this is financially feasible, but I am willing to look into it. Anyone who is interested in partnering up can feel free to contact me via email.

This is an idea that pops up every now and again amongst various boards that I read. Everyone moans about how difficult it would be to get insurance (without having any facts to back it up, just wild speculation), and the person with the original idea drops it. Personally, I think it's an awesome idea, but your first call should be to an insurance agent of some sort. Get that answered, then start looking for real estate.

Have you not seen the movie "Christine"? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085333/ The reason for the high insurance rates is those crazy kids that bring in the possessed 1958 Plymouth Fury and ruin the fun for everyone else! ;)

Seriously, I am about to move into a house with a garage. My current house does NOT have a garage and a year or so ago I would have been all over this idea.

I think another idea that could work is a "tool coop". Basically expensive tools that you only use occasionaly that a group could buy into and share. I know that to some degree this happens within the club informally right now.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

That's a really good point. I never considered the insurance angle.

I know for a fact that the Greensboro guys are doing it, so it can't be prohibitively expensive. :?

Can someone send me an email contact for one of the Gboro people? I think talking to them first would be wisest....

There is plenty of garage space for let behind Just Tires at
MillBrock & Atlantic. THis is where Chris Dale open his shop.
I know his 4 bay unit is $1700 a month.

I can contact him for the realter that handels the area or you
can inquire yourslef. His contact info is on our Track Sponsor
Page. I was looking at the area when I was thinking about
opening a shop of my own last winter.

I would be interested in sharing shop space in either
Raleigh or Wake Forest and I think Joel Haywood would
be interested as well.

That's really interesting. Have you ever investigated the insurance costs? My information is that what would cost the most.

Why not try to work something out with someone who is using a garage space for his business? What I'm suggesting is some sort of time sharing deal. The business would use the shop during whatever normal business hours they have and then your group of people rent a stall or 2 evenings and weekends.

Just a thought.

Ken:

I just spoke to Kevin Ley at MM Autowerks. He is paying $1200 a year
for 1M general liability and 74K per vehicle loss/damage coverage
plus loss coverage on all his equipment (approx 65-70k).
That works out to $100 a month!

Finding a location is not a problem, just finding a location a group
of people can agree on and be willing to commit to, would be the
biggest problem.

Shawn's Idea about renting an existing bay in a exsisting shop is
probably more feasable assuming there are shops with excess
capacity?

Me and my partners have been looking for shop space to go along with our parts business. And we have thought about just what Shawn has mentioned. It would allow us to get a bigger space and offset some of the costs asociated with it.

So if there are enough people interested in this I will move forward with it.
