Anyone familiar with the Leonberger breed of dog?

We have an older (~11 yrs) German Shepherd that is really starting to show his age, we don't know how much longer he will be around. I have been in contact with someone who has a small (~80#) Leonberger female that needs a new home.

My wife is very partial to the German Shepherd breed, and Gunther (our current dog) is a wonderful dog, but I'm not limited to just one breed. The Leonberger looks like a shaggier German Shepherd with floppy ears.

Just wondering if anyone is familiar with this breed, and any common health problems, etc.

Thanks!

Don't know anything about them, but the wake county animal shelter has a dog that they are calling a Leonberger. Dog id# 63204

They apparently have perfect health because my Vet (also my wife & sponsor) has never seen one in her practice. :D Sorry we couldn't help, but I asked.

This is probably the same one we're looking at adopting.

They originally had her listed as a German Shepherd, but I spoke to the lady who is fostering her and she told me she was more likely a small Leonberger.

Thanks all for the replies.
