Just this afternoon I was thinking about the "never dropped a valve" comment in their commercials.

Scott,

If you get serious about the Ford 302 idea, stop by Carolina Mustang in Cary and pick up a Ford Racing Performance catalog (about $5). Page 147 has engine dimensions. Length is 27.5 inches. Height is 20.25. Width is 18.75. For reference, crate engines with iron heads have a shipping weight of 450 lbs.

BTW,

How is the Celica? Is there going to be a lot of work?

Lot of work? Nah, lot of money? Maybe.

I've already ordered a replacement connecting rod and piston for #3 cylinder ($100 and $110 respectively), both should be here this week. Block will go to the machine shop this week as well, #3 cylinder is getting sleeved, and all 4 cylinders will get a final hone to equal bores. Machining cost will probably be under $200. I'll need new rings since the bores will be a hair bigger, that means another $200 or so, since I'll be "upgrading" to Total Seal rings.

Crankshaft appears to be just fine, not bent, all bearing journals look OK. I'll have the machine shop spin it to check the balance. Main bearings are all good (I wasn't circulating any big metal pieces in the oil system). Only the #3 rod bearing shows some slight polished surfaces due to the excessive interference. New set of rod bearings = $10.

Head is a total loss, and I don't feel like building a new one, I'm leaning towards this one:

LC is "the" shop for high performance old Toyota stuff. My head was basically a "cheap" version of a LC stage 2 head with a stage 3.5 camshaft. I haven't decided if I'll do a stage 3 or 4 cam.

We won't even talk about the price of a built head delivered to my door. I'm sure you can imagine (LC is to old Celica's as Rebello is to old Datsun's).

Add a full gasket set to the price list ($65).

Edit: If it doesn't self destruct, engine v 2.0 should make more power than v 1.0.

If it doesn't make more power at the dyno than the one last week, I would hope you would stop this madness ;) - AB

I found out one thing on the tear down that really explains the wacky dyno pulls.

My part of my fancy water pump-crank pulley set is an adjustable timing marker.

Some idiot had that marker pointing at 9 degrees before top dead center when the engine was really at TDC. That means setting the base timing to 8 degrees B-TDC like we did at the dyno really resulted in ignition timing of 0 degrees. Needless to say, 0 degrees sucks.
