Funny since the GTO is a huge car but I doubt Rodney would fit in one with a helmet on. When I Ax'd mine I bounced my head off the trim many a time and I'm only 5'6".

Yeah, I "test fitted" an 04 GTO before I bought the mustang.... not happening.... My buzz cut rubbed the head liner.

I've owned 3 trucks so far and after a short while, the fun of hauling crap around wore thin and the daily drive made it worse, but granted, these were all late 80's vintage Mazda's and Fords.

I believe it. Some cars are really bad for the "hmm, how tall is our average driver" quotient.

It took me one autocross (Bomb Alley Grand Prix ) to figure out that a 5'9" person with a helmet on doesn't work unless you tilt you head towards the sunroof opening while driving between cones as fast as you can. One of many reasons you don't see many '97 GS-Ts at autocrosses.

I still remember walking into the Mazda Dealer (Al Smith's at the time) in February of 2003 with my race helmet and asking to test drive a 6s with no sunroof so I could check the headroom.

I also took my helmet to Johnson Lexus and drove an IS. The Mazda was a better helmet fit. :)

Most of these guys on here or not secure enough in their masculinity to even bring the MINI into the conversation. Big HP and big tires are compensation tools. BTW, where is a Countryman S classed in AX?

An RS America with a true 16k miles and proper provenance would likely sell for $50k at auction I would think. This is probably a salvage title car that was pieced back together or something. In any event, it's not far from the truth that buying an older Porsche is the cheapest part about the experience of owning it.

I'm sorry, but I was LOL at the people that poo-pooed that "deal" because of the extra maintenance costs. When I looked at it I was like "uh, that's either a screwed up ad or an attempted scam." That would be WAY too good of a deal otherwise.

It was sort of analogous to me to the folks that say they don't want to win the lottery because of all the taxes they'd have to pay.

I made my comment with 0.0 knowledge of a RS America. All I know is from the dawn of the 911 a RMS is a every other year maintenance item, axles go bad easily, the transmissions are clunky, clutchs are finicky etc etc. So I came up with the $4-5k of 'work' comment not knowing that car is worth 40k + :).

Seems the IMS bearings are MUCH beefier and less prone to failure on the 997s (996 had lots of problems with them) and the gearbox in Ram's 987 CS feels VERY nice compared to the 993 and 70s model 911 I drove. Also the oiling issues should be gone on the new engines 09+ (9A1?). Hopefully Porsche's DI system works well and doesn't have issues longer term.

So, in regard to the RS Porsche, this smells of sh!t. Got an email back from the "owner". States she is recently divorce, blah, blah blah. Also states the car is in Nebraska and everything is set up through paypal, car is ready to ship and she won't need to be present. Really? Gee, let me send you all my money and my SS# so you can setup CC's in my name as well.

Unlike Kourosh's deal, stepping away from this one quickly before I get anything on my shoes.

I did drive a 07 (06.5) Vdub GTI today. I was impressed. Quick, minimal turbo lag, lot's of torque and with a sunroof, I had PLENTY of head room. Very clean car and only 38k on the odo. 2 things I didn't like, the retro plaid pattern in the seats and as far as I could tell it had an open diff which would make it a bit tough to autox. Anyone dealt w/ one of the new GTI's lately? Nice looking car and for me the price was right.

I also stopped by Flow Mini to look at what they had. Nothing near what I wanted. Asked them to look for a car as well.

I'm almost to the point of just trying to find a nice 330 sports package car w/ no sunroof. I think this ZHP is a true unicorn.

*sigh* Pretty much ALL that stuff is blown pretty far out of proportion, I think. Most axle breakers are doing a lot of drag starts. IMS bearing failure isn't *that* likely on earlier cars, either. It's just one of those things that the Internet makes look a lot worse than it really is. As for Ram's 987, I hate to tell you, but that gearbox isn't even a Porsche box...it's a repackaged Audi box. It's decent, but not *quite* up to par with the more recent Porsche boxes.

You want problems? Ram starts tracking his car and he could see gearbox problems. Those gearboxes have oiling issues if you track them heavily. There's a mod you can do with a recirc pump that fixes it, though. Ask me how I know...

Go buy a first year Turbo Cayenne and try to tow ANYTHING with it. Oh, wait, you probably can't find one still running. There are Porsche problems, but I think some get overblown a lot...

And even if that wasn't an RS America, that model 911 alone would be worth WAY over that price with that mileage. Glad Rodney was smart enough to uncover the scam before stepping in it!

Well if the 996/997 gear boxes shift/feel better than the 987, then that's just testament to Porsche making (or using) better gearboxes compared to the 993 or earlier transmissions. Or a 944 gearbox (yuck).

Ram won't track the CS....I'm trying to tell him how expensive it would be in tires and oiling issues etc etc etc....that way he buys a 01+ VVT engine and Megasquirt and 15x10s for the CSP car ;).

didn't Ram buy a special edition? he needs to flog it hard so some poor sap buys it once it is all used up and learns the hard way.............

nothing good ever comes from buying a pure-bred, mutts are always way more loveable.
