Not yet, I just got a case of 12 of Amsoil MTF from a guy on a forum for about the cost of the preferred shopper discount....when I'm done breaking the SI in on conventional motor oil, I'll probably start buying amsoil by the case....at which point I'll bug Karl to place an order :). If I say, let's meet at the Federal for pickup, I doubt you'd complain ;).

I could probably be convinced. ;)

Amsoil's website says that, to order, you have to have been "referred" by someone. Is that right? Surely I can just buy something without having to be part of the cult...

No, I ordered 2 qts of MTF straight from the webpage a few weeks ago. Got ripped off, but wanted to try it before I became a preferred buyer/dealer and bought a case of it.

I ended up buying Shell Rotella T6 synthetic, 5W40. It's $26/gallon at Advance Auto. I may yet return it, though, because I'd sure like to run the same stuff in both cars.

It's 20-22/gallon at Wally World :).

Alright, it's going back. Thanks! :)

So, do you know anything about it? A lot of the Merc guys like them dome diesel oil in their gasoline cars. I figured T6 had to be better, since it has the word Synthetic written on it. :) And, it's 5W, not 15W like the dino stuff.

The subaru world loves it (and now that it has API SM spec, it's ok to run 'under warranty'). HDEOs tend to be more robust than their regular counter parts of the same grade: more shear stable, higher TBN, higher starting viscosity in the given grade, more robust additive pack (including more zinc), lots of moly etc etc. I ran it in the Subaru twice till I scored a shit load of German Castrol 0w30 :).

Then I'm definitely returning it.

Good, that's a big help. Here's what I think I understand so far:

1. HDEOs are superior to their more pedestrian counterparts
2. HDEOs can be purchased at auto parts stores, and even Walmart
3. Rotella T6 Synthetic costs about the same, or even less, than something like plain old Castrol GTX

If that's all true, why would I ever use anything else? I can change the oil in the Merc twice for what I'd have paid for a single change with Amsoil, Motul, or Redline. And the Rotella might be better than all of those anyway.

Rotella T6 is a group 3 hydrocracked oil whereas Amsoil/Motul/Redline are all group 4/5 PAO/POE based oils so there will be people who play the 'group 3 isn't real synthetic' blah blah blah.

Group 4/5 oils tend to have lower NOACK volatility which is good for tracked cars as oil vapor in the intake system is not taken into account by the ECU and therefore the car technically runs a bit leaner.

Also it's just stigma against HDEO because people think they can't be good for a gasoline engine if they are designed for stinky big diesel trucks....which is stupid.

That is what i was always told, until coming to work at Wagners. We use rotella in ALL our delivery trucks and they have run and are still running at over 300k on gm 4.3 and ford 3.0!!!

Some folks are just slave to the Moblil 1 because that's what they have ALWAYS run.

I have been using the Rotella stuff for YEARS (I remember when it was like $15/gal) in all of my cars (except for the Mini Van). Honda's, Nissan's, DSM's, Mazda's all seem to do fine with it. Hell it was the first thing I did to your old CRX when I bought it  BITOG speaks highly of it too.

 I don't know what most of those words mean. Is "group 4" the ester-based or whatever it's called? I've tried reading through Bob Is The Oil Guy, but it's just too much information. Probably in the same way that normal people would read a detailing forum, then turn around and buy Nu Finish because it's closest to the front of the shelf.

The cold flow videos on Shell's website comparing T6 to regular T are impressive. Something crazy like 80K mile T6 flows better than brand new T at cold temperatures. I'll probably do a UOA on the Merc after running the T6 in it, just to see.
