with any luck i'll be picking up a motorcycle in the near future, possibly from out of state. do i get it inspected before hitting the dmv for title/tags, or dmv first? i thought the dmv won't give you registration sticker and/or tags without an inspection, but i also thought you couldn't get a vehicle inspected without a nc registration. and i really don't want to make two trips to the dmv.

Jason, I really try not to remember this stuff so I can truly tell people that I don't know call DMV. But, I think you go to dmv and they give you something like a 5 day tag until you get it inspected. As matter of fact I think I did that when I bought that sweet acura from you!

right, then you have to go back to the dmv a second time to get the real tags. which is what i'm trying to avoid.

for cars at least, when they come from out of state you get a freebie on the inspection for the first year, you just take the old title signed over to you and pay the highway use tax (3%), plus title and registration fees, then the normal annual inspection before you renew the registration kicks in the following year.

I asked DMV because I have a car with expired tags and inspection. I have to go get a 10 day tag, then get it inspected, and lastly go back to DMV for real tags. :x

With my motorcycle, they just made me get it inspected first. I just drove it with no tags. that is what i was told by several folks to do so.........

True. I just did this - it was quite easy. And NCDOT doesn't think an ancient Mercedes E320 is worth very much money, so the highway use tax wasn't even very much. :)
