So, found a possible chumpcar without title... Issue?

Will carfax/autocheck tell me if the car is hot?

Thanks!

It shouldn't be a problem unless you want to make it street legal. I would just do a bill of sale for both sides of the transaction.

Probably won't tell you if it's stolen. If you're really concerned about it, you can go to DMV with the VIN and see what records they have on it (provided it was ever titled in NC). It'll cost you a couple of $$.

If you never plan on titling/licensing the car, then no title is probably not a big deal- but I always get at least a bill of sale signed by the person who receives my $$ for a no-title car, just to cover my a$$.

Yeah, I think it could easily be exchanged from one racer to another.

I was thinking about having my insurance company check the VIN as well? I'll check with the DMV tomorrow morning.

Not planning on driving it on the street. Just a track car.

Thanks!!!
Scott

As a rule, insurance companies don't access that info. All they do is report that the car is insured to the DMV.

I'll just check with the DMV tomorrow then.

according to the LeMons website, at least in the Socialistic Republic of New Jersey, the local constabulary will cruise the pits looking for stolen cars.

wouldn't hurt to have as much documentation as you can find on hand, just in case. not to mention while towing. never can tell what the local DMV might be up to.

anyone other than me remember the "Great Sanford Raid of 2005?".

Here is an update for completeness sake...

So, talked with the DMV and the car sounds legit. They assured me it was not stolen (or at least not reported...).

Also, it was last reg in NC in 2009. This is good news as she explained on possible way of getting the title.

Submit title history request form to NCDMV.
Wait, and wait some more
Contact last seller and explain case.
Pay seller $10 for the duplicate title, and $20 / craft beer for their time
Transfer title to me
:>

Hopefully everything will go through with this one!!

That works as long as the seller is the last registered owner. My experience is when someone doesn't have the title they NEVER had the title. Hopefully that is not your case.
