Unlike my old 540i, it is impossible for the cooling system to fail 4 times in 2 years since it's air cooled. And there are no 30k mile control arm bushings to fail, no crappy traction control, no camber problems. It's a 2004 R1100S and I'm in love.

(Soon for sale -- 2006 Honda CB600F aka 599 aka Hornet, several nice upgrades, 6600mi, less than $4000)

Since you asked.. about 6 months until you have a final drive failure.

Very nice bike though. I was wondering how long it would take you to get a 2 wheeled bimmer.

My BMW moto has been the most reliable of all BMWs ever. Of course it only has 12k, but I hear they are trouble-free. 1100, maybe not ;)

Congrats. Let's organize a day ride.

Fyi this bike has all the options I was looking for -- ABS, heated grips, center stand, hard cases with city lids. Some S models don't have these, including the nice replica prep for sale on Craigslist now. And that took all of the other cool looking replica bikes out of contention, couldn't find one with the options I needed.
So far I'm loving the torque, stability, and ease which with this thing goes through corners. Still learning the quirks of the boxer.

I wasn't quite ready to buy yet, but the original owner was just one of those perfect guys to buy a bike from ... retired psychologist with 2 Ducatis and a Triumph in the garage, wife retired as a prof from Clemson and throws pots for a retirement occupation next door to his garage full of toys. DD is a Miata. The guy has owned 3 R1100s bikes since 99, and has put over 100k miles on them. He rode the bike to the rocky mountains and back, he certainly knows these bikes! And he never even dropped it, bless his heart.

Even though he has his own motorcycle lift in his garage, the bike has been going to the BMW dealer for all maintenance, which is up to date. I just added up the accessories he added over it's 32k miles, and it's $3k in parts. The only thing it will need in the next 10k miles is an oil change and maybe some brakes. He made some good choices:

Throttlemeister cruise
Motolight driving lights
Sargent seat
Works suspension (off the bike, in need of rebuild, stock 3k mile shocks back on)
Blinky brake lights
Smoke windscreen
Factory hard cases
Wunderlich tank bag
Knee pads

The "normal" lids on the hard side saddlebags make the bike like 10 feet wide, it's mentioned often in the reviews. The city lids are many inches shorter and make the bags about 8" wide each. Unfortunately not wide enough for a helmet, but at least you don't hit signposts or pedestrians with the things...

Awesome, they do make cars pale in comparison. I have the city lids on mine as well, my wife wanted to buy me the others for my birthday but I don't really see the use unless I'm going cross country or something. Lets get together and ride some time.

Great bike - very smooth running. You'll love the transmission as well....those boxer bikes are clunky IMO, but our Rotax-based bikes are smoooove
