...maybe another good read if you want some idea where this type of personal tracking is heading:

My opinion is this research is neat, but not earth shattering. So they can predict, using data from my phone, where I'm gonna go in the future with 93% accuracy? Well of course they can, because I probably do the same things over and over 93% of the time. No shit.

I'd like to know more about how they could see flu symptoms before someone even knew they were sick, but it sounds like that was part of one of the studies where the users were equipped with phones with extra sensors and were sending TONS more data than a standard smartphone is now. And it required that user to be in a community of other users with the same device, too. Fortunately, or unfortunately, we're going to all have a diverse set of devices from a diverse group of carriers for a long time.

And the study in Belgium? Seriously? They were shocked to find that the two halves of the country barely talk to each other? That seems hardly surprising since they SPEAK DIFFERENT LANGUAGES. Sheesh.

I'm still not seeing a reason to care that my phone is reporting my location to the mother ship.

All good points.

It's not problem until it becomes a problem. Which could be at 2am when "Homeland Defense" forces take you from your home because your cellphone's location patterns and Internet search activities were flagged by some MIT-generated computer algorithm that has a reported 95% accuracy in identifying potential pedophiles/terrorists/drug activity/whatever. Of course, I'm not saying you do any of this stuff, but if you/someone were unwittingly snagged in this scenario, it would be very tough to extricate yourself without considerable time and expense. Order of magnitude worse than identity theft, I would imagine...

Sure, and we're still a long ways from granting them that power just because my cellphone can report my movements. *shrug*

That's an issue to worry about, I admit. But it's a totally separate issue.

You can use that to justify not working, not using credit cards or banks.

Also, you don't need a smart phone for the cell services to track you. They can do that with the most basic of cell phones.

And your rights are (mostly) protected when the provider has the information. I don't know if CALEA applies to data stored on your phone since the provider isn't involved.

[edit]
The implication isn't that CALEA protects you, it's that the provider is put in place as a roadblock to make sure that the LEAs have done the appropriate leg work to access the information.
