My mom wants to buy us an hd camcorder... Looking for better video than the flip we already have... Plus longer battery life (and even some in-car track footage, cause we all know how much mom's love that!)

Budget is less than $500 preferably

Thanks
Stacy

Sorry... should have been more specific... main use will be "normal" camcorder stuff... my little sister's wedding, video of our 10-month old, etc.

So I'm thinking something along these lines:
http://www.google.com/products/catalog? ... FYQ8wIwAg#

http://www.google.com/products/catalog? ... FwQ8gIwAw#

http://www.google.com/products/catalog? ... GAQ8gIwBA#

http://www.google.com/products/catalog? ... GYQ8wIwBg#

Something with good stability control, preferably an external mic option, and a recording format that doesn't involve having to convert anything so I can edit on my iMac.

Panasonic? No. Usually can't go wrong with Canon. Sony makes me mad because they like to put MemoryStick in everything, but in absence of that they usually make decent stuff like this. Can't say much about JVC.

To me, size and battery life are almost everything. Why? Because the best camera in the world is the one you have on you (and works). If you have great battery, you're more likely to just grab it even when you know it isn't fully charged. If it's a good size, you're more likely to grab it because you can stick it in that bag your wife is carrying (or your man purse? *cough*). That's why I used to love the Flip and currently just love the iPhone4. I have it on me and it works well enough to be useful. I've had a ton of kick-ass camcorders and never have them when they would have been "better." *shrug*
