Hey Guys,

Just put together a PC that is capable of running Iracing and curious to see if other THSCCers are using it as well. I play a lot of Forza 3 but looking for something more realistic. From what I have read, it is pretty good simulator.

I'm thinking of getting back into it - I know Stacy King is pretty big on it.

I do...still not very good. The Skippy car and SRF are my faves to date (not willing to pay up for more choices yet) Serves as a regular reminder that I'm not ready or good enough for the real thing

I have had fun with Forza 3 and a little bit of GT5. Both are a blast to play and fun to race. More and more people keep talking about Iracing and I started looking into it.

I guess, is it a pretty good "sim" or is it just a fancy game. I really like the fact that I could drive VIR, Summit, Road Atlanta, Rockingham, Charlotte, ect all tracks I have been on in the car.

The problem is... I need to buy a different wheel. I could sell the Microsoft wheel and go with a Fanatec or Logitech wheel but hate to make the switch if it is just another "game".

Joined a few months ago and really enjoy it, but like Sean I haven't had time to get on lately. I'm a much better driver after last weekend's LeMons so maybe I'll get back on and try.

I'm on it, but it really kicks my butt. I have been able to run charlotte foot to the floor for more than a few laps. one blink of concentration and your eating the wall. Summit point has bested me, I can't keep the car on the track.

Scott... it depends on what you want to get out of it as to whether it's worth it or not.

For me, the track accuracy trumps all, and that alone is worth the price of admission and track add-ons. You definitely won't get the eye candy that you find in Forza or GT5, but that's because that processing power is used for physics.

You can choose to race in iRacing official sessions (Race, Qualifying, Time Trials, or Practice) or in hosted sessions (some are open, some are private.) Your Safety Rating (the rating used to determine your license level) is NOT affected during a Practice session, or in league sessions. The Safety Rating (known as "SR") is a major difference between iRacing and every other sim out there. It's intent is to basically simulate damage to vehicles over time, a "barometer" of a driver's overall safety and fairness... both of which serve as a deterrent to over-aggressive "normal" online racing. It's not perfect, but I think it does it's job well (some don't though, but no one has come up with anything better.)

I'm not on it nearly as much as I'd like to be. Right now, I'm participating in a league called "FSR - Friendly Slow Racing" http://flyingkiwi.org/iracing/ ... I'm running the "SIMR" series that races every Sunday starting at noon. Some races are Daytona Prototypes & Mustangs, other races are Radicals, Miatas, & Late Model stock cars, still others are Corvettes on Ovals (!)... all within this one series. It is an endurance series, so each race is usually 50 to 90 minutes long. But the point of the league is friendly, courteous racing (the slow part simply means anyone is welcome, even if you're slow.) It's an atmosphere much like our normal track days... everyone there is there to have fun and help everyone else. There is a point system set up for it, but no one really cares about it LOL.

So yeah... I'm a fanboy, what can I say

I need to get some time on Mid-Ohio and Summit Point Main. Can you just buy a couple of races on each without signing up for a long time membership?

You can do one of the short-term memberships... often very cheap for one month... but you'd have to purchase Mid-Ohio (Summit Point is included free.)

Go to iRacing.com... they usually offer membership specials

Feel free to use me as a reference... iRacing member number 20587

Now... if you're REALLY serious about it... save up some dough and do some sessions with P. Krause on his unit. That, plus his coaching, and you'll be golden

Let me know if/when you get set up... I'll even host a private session and we can have a THSCC practice night or something.

FWIW, Rfactor's Mid-O is pretty darn good... I can't tell much difference between that and the iRacing version except that the elevation changes are represented better... and it's been a few years since I've driven it on Rfactor... but I do think the physics of the cars is better. Even if there isn't one that would simulate the F5, it will still do you lots of good.

Yeah, I am almost setup w/ iracing. My friend from work has it and I really liked it. I thought the physics were pretty amazing.

Going to order the g27 wheel this week to go along with my new video card.

i just beat the expert mode last nite. on my gran turismo 5 game ps3. logitech gt5 wheel and pedal set has been durable as get out.. i have a 427 mustang that has a blower on it, it is wicked. i can burn out slicks to 45 mph from a stop. it is from grand touring garage. i won the historic racing cup with a 69 camaro.. with the race mod package and all the trimmings, 510 hp with a blower and locker rear end, it sorta drives a little sideways, but so what.. its a camaro.
that game is hard but is alot of fun.
